Even with forecasts of rain, this weekend should be a good, long one. Relax and squeeze the last bit of summer out of the weekend before the kids head back to school and the sun starts to set a little earlier. Read on for ideas of how to help summer go out with style this weekend.

Take a day trip to the Eastern Shore

Rise early to head up the coast and visit the 20th Chincoteague Island Decoy & Art Festival. The two-day festival runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. More than 40 exhibitors will display decoy carvings, wildlife paintings, artwork, jewelry and more. Food and baked goods will be available for sale and the Chincoteague Decoy Carvers and Artists Association will hold a raffle to raise money for its scholarship fund. A weekend pass is $5 and a day pass is $3; children under 12 get in for free. Read more here.

Enjoy barbecue for a cause

Honor the memory of 1st Lieutenant Michael Johnson by enjoying a barbecue fundraiser at Bourbon Street Bar & Grille. The Peninsula Pig Party will kick off at 4 p.m. Saturday, and will feature music, door prizes and raffles. Proceeds will go to the Michael Johnson Scholarship Foundation. Johnson was killed in action in Kunar, Afghanistan on Sept. 8, 2009. Learn more here.

Listen to sweet sounds of symphony

The Virginia Symphony will play its annual free outdoor concert at the Yorktown Victory Monument at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Be sure to pack a picnic supper, bring a lawn chair or blanket and settle in early to catch the pre-show performance by The Fifes and Drums of York Town. For more details, click here.

Race crabs to raise money

Berret’s Seafood Restaurant and Taphouse Grill is hosting its 20th Annual Crab Races to benefit The Chesapeake Bay Foundation from 6 to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Participants pick crabs to race and win prizes for the winning sponsors in three race categories, the cutest crab and the best name. For more info about sponsoring a crab, click here.

Music across the Historic Triangle

If the Virginia Symphony isn’t your thing, check out the last offering in the Yankee Candle Flagship concert series, an acoustic rock group called Stone’s Throw. The event, which features barbeque from Mrs. Claus’ Bakery & Café, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Click here for details.

Croon oldies favorites like, “I’m Into Something Good” and “Mrs. Brown” with Herman’s Hermits at Busch Gardens. Former teen heartthrob Peter Noone will take the stage at the Royal Palace Theatre at 7 p.m. Sept 4-5. The concert is included with admission. More details here.

Mark the end of summer with classic movie

Blue Talon Bistro draws its annual summer movie series to a close with Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller, “North by Northwest.” See Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint scale Mt. Rushmore, looking cocktail-ready the entire time. The movie will be shown in the 400 block of Prince George St., starting at 8 p.m.
