Bruton

It’s Dec. 12 of last year, and Greg Adams, dressed in the green and yellow of Bruton High School, breaks the huddle down on the field of Virginia Tech’s 66,000-seat Lane Stadium. The Panthers are in the midst of a tightly contested Division III state final, and the speedy Adams, a natural tailback, has helped drive his tiny school to the brink of its first championship. But as Adams lines up for the play, he doesn’t stand in the backfield, awaiting a handoff. Instead the 5-10, 185-pound senior is in a three-point stance on the offensive line, staring down massive pass rushers to whom he gives up on average five inches and 80 pounds.
