[quote name="jerry"]He y Mr Citizen, What was the reason for the 40 miles you drove?
I am fortunate to have a job, even if it is too far away. As far as Yankee attitude, I am actually Southern born and bred. However, I just get more than a little frustrated with the chicken Little attitude many of my fellow southerners adopt when so much as a heavy frost hits the ground.
Don't make unnecessary trips (true regardless of the weather), increase following distance, and go easy on the brakes. Yesterday's cancellation endangered the kids far more than if they just kept them in school and let them out at the normal time. When I drove 40 miles back in the afternoon yesterday, the roads were bone dry.

Hey Mr Citizen, What was the reason for the 40 miles you drove? Were they for a cause such as Meals on Wheels or just to prove you could. I repeat... Go back to Buffalo and relieve us from your Yankee attitude.

If the schools would have held off U-turning the buses back home this morning and instead kept the kids in school, they would have had safe, sun-thawed roads. Thanks to poor decision making by the administration, my kids got two trips on icy roads instead of one. Some kids got three trips because their parents were not home.
A mere glance at the Doppler would have shown this snow squall to be a short-term event followed by clear skies and warmer temps.

Folks around here apparently think they are still in NY, NJ, CT, NH, PA, OH, MI and all those other lovely states that are prepared for winter with plenty of plows, sand, and salt.

REALITY CHECK! You're in Hampton Roads! We're not prepared for this stuff so you need to slow down, back off and relax. You'll get to where you're trying to go.

Eventually. 8)

We tried to go from Ford's Colony to Grove Christian Outreach Center. Longhill Road from Old Towne to Ironbound is a solid sheet of ice. Traffic going west was bumper to bumper and barely moving. I don't know where the author of comment # 2 was driving.

[quote name="Citizen #2"]To the citizen that thinks cancellation is ridiculous. I want my child safe and sound.... have you driven the roads lately??

You bet. I drove 40 miles in it today, both on back roads and the interstate. No problems. How is it safer to bus the kids to school, send them home again, and then bring those kids whose parents are not home back to school, and then send them back home yet again?
By the time 3:00 rolls around, and temps climb into the 40s, I believe transportation issues would have been minimal.
A hyper obsession with safety does not necessarily net the desired safe results.

To the citizen that thinks cancellation is ridiculous. I want my child safe and sound.... have you driven the roads lately?? There is a 10 car pile up on the interstate thus shutting it down northbound due to slick roads, cars have ran off the road in Williamsburg... I suggest you go try your luck out on the roads... The streets are more than just wet!!!

It was pretty bad out there. Our bus driver had the sense to just pull over, stop the bus, and wait it out. She said she could not see to drive, so she wasn't going to drive. She just sat there until they told her to take the kids home.
My compliments to her for making the safe choice for our kids!
