Pet Perishes in Ford's Colony Fire

One family pet died and another was missing Monday after a house fire in the 100 block of Great Glen in the Ford's Colony neighborhood.

James City County firefighters responded Monday morning around 11:20 to reports of the house fire. When they arrived, firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from a second floor bedroom window. The fire was contained to the bedroom and extinguished within 20 minutes, although fire crews remained on the scene until about 2 p.m.

Severe damage was reported to the bedroom, with moderate fire and smoke damage to the second floor and moderate smoke damage throughout the home.

None of the family members was home, but a family dog was found dead in the bedroom where the fire began. One cat was found alive, but another was reported missing. No injuries were reported.

The James City Fire Marshal said an electrical issue caused the blaze, which was accidental.
