Suspects in Custody after Kiln Creek Burglary, Car Chase

YC-new-badge-375Two men are in custody after a citizen’s report of a burglary yesterday at a home in the York County area of Kiln Creek. That report led to a police chase that started with York County sheriff’s deputies and ended several crashes later in Hampton.

Nineteen-year-old Andre L. Shorts, of the 1300 block of Johnsons Road in Norfolk and Yaree M. Woods, 28, of the 400 block of Cobblewood Bend in Chesapeake, are in custody in Hampton and Virginia Beach. The York sheriff’s office intends to charge them with three felony counts each of burglary and grand larceny. A York sheriff's spokesman said additional charges are possible.

The incident began Wednesday afternoon around 1:30 when York deputies received a 911 call of a possible residential burglary in progress in the 100 block of Jenkins Court in the Highlands neighborhood of Kiln Creek.

Deputies responded to the area and found a vehicle matching the description provided by the caller; a license plate check revealed the car had been stolen out of Virginia Beach.

Deputies attempted to pull over the driver, who instead took off out of Kiln Creek and onto Interstate 64 eastbound. One deputy was involved in a single-car accident while attempting to give chase.

Virginia State Police joined the pursuit on the interstate, and a pair of trooper squads ended up in wrecks as the chase came to a stop with a crash on I-64 near North King Street. Injuries were minor.

The suspects fled on foot, but were apprehended within minutes of the wreck.

A York spokesman said the investigation continues, and anyone with information should call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

No, no one else is pondering. The police did their job to the best of their ability, as they were trained to do, for the welfare and protection of us. Insurance isn't free, btw.

Is anyone else pondering the danger posed by the chase that involved numerous vehicles on public thoroughfares? I guarantee the damage to the police vehicles was more than the value of the items taken from the residence. That is what insurance supposedly is for. People could have been hurt or killed.....
