Japanese Ambassador Presents Lecture at W&M

wmlogoAmbassador Ichiro Fujisaki of Japan will present a lecture at the College of William & Mary March 24 at 10:45 a.m. in the Sir Christopher Wren Building. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Fujisaki began his term as U.S. Ambassador in June 2008. The appointment is his second U.S. appointment. He served as the political minister of the Embassy of Japan in Washington, DC, from 1995-99. Other diplomatic posts include Jakarta, Paris and London.

Prior to his current appointment he served as Ambassador to the United Nations and to the World Trade Organization in Geneva. While there, Fujisaki served as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Earlier in his career he held such posts as Deputy Director-General for Asian Affairs and Director-General for North American Affairs before ultimately being appointed as the Deputy Foreign Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo. Fujisaki has also served as the Sherpa, or the personal representative, of the Prime Minister to G8 Summit meetings.

The Ambassador is no stranger to higher education. He was a research associate at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London from 1987-88 and taught as a lecturer of International Relations at Sophia University in Tokyo from 1991-95.

Fujisaki and his wife, Yoriko, have two daughters.
