Capital Trailhead Dedication Today at Jamestown

va-capital-trail
The Capital Trail Bridge near Jamestown
Virginia’s First Lady Maureen McDonnell will be in James City County this morning to dedicate the eastern trailhead of the Virginia Capital Trail.

The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m., rain or shine. The rain location, which seems likely today, is inside the Jamestown Settlement building in classrooms A-B of the education wing of the building. Guests should enter the building through the "group arrivals" entrance to the right of the main entrance to avoid the traffic in the lobby area.

Mrs. McDonnell will be joined by State Sen. Tommy Norment, Jr., Dominion Virginia Power chief executive officer Paul D. Koonce and the Williamsburg Area Bicyclists. Students from Matoaka Elementary, including the 5th grade chorus and the girls running club, will also attend.

The trail connects Virginia’s past and present capitals of Williamsburg and Richmond along more than 50 miles of the Scenic Route 5 corridor. It's not quite completed, so local bike enthusiasts are hoping to make a big statement of support this morning with a good turnout.

The Jamestown trailhead includes a shelter, interactive kiosk with information on public accommodations, historical sites, wildlife and natural resources along the trail. The electronic kiosk is funded through a grant from the Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion Resources.

The trail was conceived in 1996 and organizers broke ground in July 2005. Completion of the 55-mile trail is projected for December 2014.

How about we keep the politics out of this great event? Dignitaries, school children, cyclists, walkers of all political stripes came together last Friday to celebrate the successful partnership of public and private entities. The result of this cooperation and overwhelming support is an attraction embraced by the community, and an amenity that will benefit the entire region. If the Va. Capital Trail Foundation is successful, this trail will generate revenue from visitors coming to Virginia from all over the world. We all win. Let's celebrate!

Political sniping aside, I am grateful for foresight of previous administrations for this resource for safe walking and riding. Other countries have hundreds of miles of similar trails for families and individuals to enjoy. I'm glad we are trying to catch up.

Whoa Seasons!! Do we have a nasty attitude? Should we dredge up Ms Kaine to do the honors or some other tree-hugging liberal? I think it is about time we have a fiscal conservative in office to maintain some modicum of responsibility to wasteful expenditures that serve only a precious few. That's how we got into the budgetary mess we are in to begin with.

Im glad he sent his wife to handle this becasue we need him and Cuccinelli defending our constitutional rights not to HAVE to purchase something. Our forefathers are turning in their graves knowing that the non-american democrats are trying to over turn 400 years of democracy and freedom to all.

Ironic that Mrs. McDonnell would attend and invite credit for this. While I appreciate the office of "first lady," her husband and others to the far right would never have supported any public amenity like this trail whatsoever. It would have been cut very quickly from any type of public expense. Guess the Guv is too busy with Cuccinelli filing our frivolous and expensive health care lawsuit to attend. What a joke: the lawsuit, our AG, and our Guv who campaigned from the middle but couldn't be more to the far right extreme.
