Democrats Ask Cuccinelli: "How Much?"

RICHMOND – Virginia Democrats have filed a Freedom of Information Act request to find out how much Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is spending to sue the federal government to overturn the federal health care legislation signed last week by President Barack Obama.

Virginia Democrats asked for the records of Cuccinelli and his staff in preparing the suit; a list of conference calls or written correspondence between the attorney general’s office and other groups in planning the lawsuit; the names of any outside firms contracted to assist with the lawsuit; and the attorney general’s full schedule since taking office.

“Instead of tackling important issues that Virginians are dealing with everyday, like helping citizens who are facing home foreclosure or being exploited by predatory lending, our attorney general has spent his first three months in office promoting his radical agenda,” Dave Mills, executive director of the Democratic Party of Virginia, stated in a press release.

“Standing in the way of the health care reform that Virginians need is unacceptable.”

Cuccinelli, a Republican and former state senator from Fairfax, has also sued the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, challenging its findings on global warming.

He maintains that he was elected to defend the U.S. and Virginia constitutions – and that the federal government has overreached on both health care and environmental edicts.

Cuccinelli also has said that his office’s involvement in the federal lawsuits has not detracted from its other duties.

But Democratic groups have raised questions in hopes of scoring political points. They also have criticized Cuccinelli for telling Virginia’s public universities and colleges that they should remove gays and lesbians from their anti-discrimination policies – a decision overturned by Gov. Bob McDonnell.

The group Virginia Young Democrats has started a Web site called dropthelawsuit.com, hoping to pressure Cuccinelli to abandon the health care action. As of Monday, more than 400 people had signed the online petition.

“Yet again, Virginia’s attorney general has decided to seek the front page instead of doing the job he was elected to do,” said Sean Holihan, president of the organization.

The state Democratic Party as a whole has launched an online petition “calling on Ken Cuccinelli to stop wasting our tax dollars on his political stunts.” In the first 24 hours, more than 8,300 people signed the petition, Mills said.

State Democratic Chairman Richard Cranwell said the federal health care law will benefit millions of Virginians by lowering insurance premiums and prescription costs and prohibiting discrimination against people because of pre-existing conditions.

“Cuccinelli has decided to wage a fruitless war against health care reform – by filing a frivolous lawsuit against the federal government,” Cranwell said.

Re "Tired of it all"--I may be wrong, but I don't believe the Codes/Acts mentioned are part of the U. S. Constitution. There are laws about driving an automobile, but driving is still not a right under the Constitution.

GO KEN!!!!
Let us know what we can do to help. I am willing to contribute either in actions or financially. BTW - the Freedom of Information request is a ploy and strategy often used by the Democrat Party. They submit these requests in the hopes of eating up lots of government resources and time, hence impeding our elected officials to getting to meaningful issues and problems.

That's what the AG is supposed to do. His job is protect the people of Virginia and I commend him on his effort in doing so. He recognizes how this bill will bankrupt our country and he is doing his best to overturn.Natura lly the democrates are against his suit but they are the ones who are at the cause of this trouble. One sure way to stop this travesty is to vote all of them out of office come November and start over.

Seems ironic that the "tax and spend" crowd is suddenly worried about costs.

They are desperate. The info won't slow Ken down one little bit. Are they going to ask the same of all others that sue like the doctors too? See http://tinyurl.com/ycex3y8

"Tired Of It All" said it all when he cited the laws that are bankrupting health care. And amazingly, people who must be living in the rabbit hole somehow see it as a "bad comment." I'm all for charging high premiums if you're fat, so that's currently 2/3 of Americans; more if you smoke; more if you don't exercise; and the highest premiums go to parents who are raising porkers. It's sorta the "you broke it, you pay for it" policy.

Obamacare is a huge mistake. We need to support whatever can be done to minimize or get rid of it.

Those who say they are "most patriotic" and wear lapel flag pins are the least tolerant of opposing views it seems. In fact, they'd have been the Tories during the Revolution, sadly. Now to today, our far right AG and Gov need to govern as they were elected, from the middle and not from an extreme. Don't we have important economic development prospects to secure? Isn't Bob for Jobs? His extremist AG is ruining the case for us, very sadly!

Sometimes you just have to say no.

Truly tired of all the bickering on both sides, but with regard to Warren's comment about the Constitution not guaranteeing a right to health care...42 U.S.C. Sec. 1395dd, Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act requires emergency rooms to treat patients regardless of ability to pay (which we ultimately pay for in increased medical costs and premiums) and Virginia Law 32.1-324.3 establishes the The Uninsured Medical Catastrophe Fund. So, yes, we ultimately pay for the 2-pack-a-day smoker with health problems and no insurance. Back to the bickering...ins tead of the constant, unproductive condemnation generated on both sides, can someone please offer some constructive ideas?
