Local I-64 Traffic Cameras Out of Commission

vdotlogoVDOT has announced many of its traffic cameras on Interstate 64 are out because of flooding in electrical cabinets affecting underground cable.

Heavy rains led to the flooding, which wrecked the underground cables. Broken cameras include those between Fort Eustis Boulevard (exit 250) and the Busch Gardens exit at mile marker 244. There are other intermittent camera outages throughout the region where flooding occurred, affecting the equipment.

The cameras will be out of service and unavailable for at least 60 days, while repairs are made. A VDOT spokeswoman said reports from the cameras will not be available on the VDOT Web site, on the call-in 511 line or through Traffic Land, VDOT's internet provider.

One reason the cameras were installed was for hurricane evacuation. Let's hope it doesn't rain during the next hurricane.

What incentive does VDOT have to anything to a degree of excellence. It's not like they are using funds that they earned. Are they concerned with a reputation...no . It's job security for them if it's not done right the first time. They get to go back to the drawing board and spend our money all over again.
I find it hard to imagine that no one thought about weather tight seals.

D'oh !! That's what happens when you give Homer Simpson the contract to install those cameras. I can't remember the last time I've seen the message boards work correctly around the Williamsburg area. Spent more than hour stopped for that wreck last week around West Point. Phil Shucet we need you again !!

Unbelievable--f or all the "we're focused on emergency response" drivel that VDOT spills out one would at least expect them to consider the area's number one cause of natural emergencies to be taken into account when designing their systems. Funny that Verizon, Dominion and COX don't suffer 60-day outages every time it rains, yet have a significantly larger amount of buried infrastructure. ..

Wow! Why am I not surprised? I rely on these cameras when I must travel to NN or South Side and more often than not a goodly percentage are out of commission. (As I observed during the recent snow storm) Now we realize they aren't even weather proof. Yet another example of VDOT's failure to spend our funds wisely.
