The mythical griffin!
A 16-month search that considered - ever so briefly - ideas like cheese-slathered asparagus as a literal homage to the green and gold concluded this afternoon with College of William and Mary President Taylor Reveley declaring, "Get me the griffin!"
Yes, after considering college founders King William and Queen Mary, the pug (a nod to the royal pooch), the wren (as in the diminutive but feisty bird as well as the Wren Building), and the mythical phoenix (apparently on the seal George Wythe designed for the college), the winner was another mythical beast, the griffin. According to the W&M mascot search Web site, the griffin's "bald eagle head hearkens back to W&M as Alma Mater of a Nation."
Immediate reaction on the Tribe mascot search Twitter feed was mixed. Many poked fun at its similarity to Harry Potter house at Hogwarts. "I'm shouting WELL DONE GRIFFINDOR at every game. Anyone with me?" read one Tweet.
But at Kaplan Arena, where the announcement was made to great fanfare, there was the sense of accomplishment.
Hundreds of students, alumni and other members of the College of William and Mary community came to Kaplan Arena at William and Mary Hall Tuesday to see the unveiling of the College’s new mascot, the griffin.
The short ceremony featured outgoing Student Assembly president Sarah Rojas ’10 and Tribal Fever founder Chase Hathaway as emcees, Vice President for Student Affairs Virginia Ambler and Athletics Director Terry Driscoll.
Rojas began the event with a subtle jab at one of the less popular mascot finalists.
“I’m excited to tell you all that our new mascot is the pug — I’m just kidding,” she said.
Rojas then introduced Hathaway.
“This is the moment you’ve all been waiting for for months and months, or years and years,” he said. “In just a few seconds, our school will no longer not have a mascot.”
Hathaway said that, although the new mascot would hopefully be a part of the College’s identity well into the future, the “Tribe” moniker and character would not change.
“We’re still the Tribe, right?” Hathaway said. “Just because we have a cute mascot or mascots, we’re still the Tribe.”
According to Hathaway, the new mascot would help continue the apparent rise in school spirit, as evidenced by increased turnout at athletic events, the football team’s appearance in the Football Championship Subdivision semi-final game and the men’s basketball team’s selection to the National Invitation Tournament.
“There’s been so much school pride this year, and we’re so excited to keep it going,” Hathaway said.
Both Hathaway and Driscoll said that student and community input were taken into consideration before the Mascot Committee’s final decision on the griffin. According to Driscoll, more than 800 people submitted mascot ideas. The committee received over 22,000 comments on the five mascot finalists, and more than 11,000 people filled out the finalist survey.
Following Driscoll’s remarks, Ambler introduced a video on the mascot selection process starring College President Taylor Reveley. Reveley, who could not attend due to a prior commitment in Washington, D.C., looked to a bust of Thomas Jefferson for guidance on the selection.
“The time has come to make a final decision on the malady of the mascot,” Reveley said. “Get me the griffin.”
At the conclusion of the video, the College’s new green and gold griffin mascot made its first public appearance.
While each of the five mascot finalists received criticism from some members of the College community, the mascot’s entrance was greeted by applause and cheers.
“I didn’t really have a preference of the five finalists, but I thought the griffin was a good choice,” Samantha Rumsey ’10 said.
Hillary Nebhut ’10 said that she preferred the griffin from the original release of the five finalists.
“I really wanted the griffin,” she said.
Ambler said that she was pleased with the reception of the new mascot.
“I think this is a great day,” she said. “It was a warm welcome from the Tribe faithful.”
At an impromptu press conference after the reveal, Reveley, who had been battling traffic from meetings in Washington, was asked if the next step would be to name the Griffin. In no uncertain terms, Reveley said the matter of the mascot had officially concluded. If Tribe fans felt compelled to name their mascot, he said, so be it.

Did the committee/president miss that? Or are we getting ad dollars for it? Ruins any uniqueness and pride when Busch sells millions of souvenirs with "our" (I mean their) Griffin logo.
An opportunity lost here for a great mascot. The apathy is deafening...
I hope that the W&M administration sends a letter of apology to Canisius College in Buffalo for kidnapping their mascot. The Golden Griffins are probably consulting a lawyer even as we speak. I guess the Honor Code doesn't apply to stealing another school's mascot!
I was at WM Hall yesterday for the unveiling of the Griffin. The student inside the costume is really what makes this great - he/she was funny, engaging and worth cheering for. Go Tribe!
I was absolutely sure that no mascot selection would make me happy and assuage my disappointment at losing our W&M feathers. To my great surprise, I really like our new Griffin very much and believe he will represent us well and proudly (and he has feathers too...).

I HAVE TO AGREE; IT'S BADDDD. Could a redesign make the wings bigger or something a little more imposing or memorable?
"Zoinks Scoob, that costume is awful!'
