United Way at 99% of Campaign Goal

The United Way of Greater Williamsburg announced last week it has reached 99 percent of its campaign goal for the year, and has raised over $1.5 million from community contributions.

“We believe that United Way’s performance in fund raising is a vote of confidence from our donors for the impact we are making in our community,” said Campaign Chair Marshall Warner.

The campaign is divided into various fundraising divisions. This year, the automotive division raised more than $36,000; large retail businesses (including Belk, Target, and Best Buy) also raised over $36,000; local nonprofits raised in excess of $95,000; and major accounts (including Anheuser Busch and Busch Gardens) raised more than $608,000 with the help of employees and corporate donations.

The citizen division, made up of collections from mail solicitations and various fundraising events, brought in over $302,000.

The money raised will help fund 31 different programs, which include Big Brothers Big Sisters’ community-based and school-based mentoring programs, Red Cross’ Blood Services and Health and Safety programs, Salvation Army’s transitional housing and social services programs, Avalon’s emergency shelter program, Housing Partnerships home repair program,  and others. The United Way Information & Referral program, which offers emergency aid to locals in need, is also partially funded through the organization’s capital campaign.

United Way of Greater Williamsburg serves the City of Williamsburg, James City County and the Bruton District of York County.
