W'burg Financial Adviser Struck, Killed on J. Clyde Morris

A Williamsburg man was struck and killed Saturday night while attempting to cross J. Clyde Morris Boulevard in Newport News.

Newport News police said that shortly after 9 p.m. Stephen James Shonka, a 34-year-old financial adviser, was trying to cross the busy road at Diligence Drive, just south of the Interstate 64 overpass. He was headed southbound across J. Clyde when he was struck by an eastbound 2004 Acura driven by a 30-year-old Newport News man. Police said the Acura's driver had a green light when the accident occurred.

Newport News police said Shonka sustained serious injuries and was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 11 p.m. Police said also that Shonka's blood alcohol level appeared to be a factor in the accident.

The Acura's driver was not injured, but his passenger, a Hampton woman, was treated for minor cuts and lacerations caused by flying glass.

The driver of the Acura was not charged.

Our prayers are with the Shonka family on their tragic loss. We can only hope that Steve's untimely death might serve as a cautionary tale of the dangers of drinking and driving, and that perhaps others may be spared the same fate. We can also be grateful that no one else was seriously hurt.

We are deeply saddened by the untimely loss of Steve. He was dear to our hearts - a friend. Even though our relationship was on a professional level, Steve always made us feel welcome and treated us with much warmth and respect. He had a great love for his his little family and always spoke fondly of his Mom. We would say, Don't get us into anything you wouldn't recommend to your Mom.
Our prayers go out to all his family and business associates. We shall miss him.

My heart goes out to the Shonka family.I am a self employed therapist and the stress that certain professions and my patients with long term illness are facing is unreal. May he be in a better place, so sad
