City Interviewing for Planning Comm. Vacancy

Williamsburg planning commission will lose Chairman Doug Pons when he begins his term on city council in July, so council will be conducting interviews next week to fill the vacancy.

There are four recent applicants for planning commission: David DaFashy, a William and Mary physician who ran for city council in the most recent election; Demetrios Florakis, owner of City Green on Richmond Road; Richard Baker; and Drew Gruber.

Two previous applications are still also open, that of Board of Zoning Appeals member Fred Siegel and Architectural Review Board Vice-Chair Dan Quarles.

City Council will conduct interviews with applicants during the week of June 14, and will likely make an appointment at their first July meeting.

Thanks Mr. Pons you did a super job in keeping things together. The hardest was for the City Council to accept the Planning Commission studies and conclusions. Hopefully the new Chairperson will be a student of Mr. Pons' experience.

Having met David Dafashy during the campaign, I'd like to see him get the nod. He doesn't have an agenda, and genuinely wants to listen to all viewpoints before he decides. He was raised here and truly loves Williamsburg.

Sally - Why do you require the person be a self-employed businessman? Can't women also apply? People in other fields? People who are stay-at-home parents? Folks newer to town, with some fresh perspectives and not beholden to local special interests? Your picky criteria seems narrow and non-democratic.

my 2 cent: Doug Pons' replacement should bring to the table much of the same qualities as Doug Pons....Self employeed businessman, young family and long standing in Williamsburg.
