Pedestrian Struck, Killed on Route 199

State police released details Tuesday about a fatal accident involving a pedestrian early Monday morning on Route 199 in James City County.

A man identified as 23-year-old Shane Stewart of Williamsburg was walking in the middle of an eastbound lane between the Mounts Bay Road entrance to Kingsmill and the Route 60 exit around 4:30 a.m. when he was struck by a 2001 Dodge pick-up truck. A motorist passing the scene shortly after the accident reported emergency crews present but a victim in the road, beneath a sheet and apparently beyond help.

A state police spokesman said the investigation showed Stewart had been drinking and was intoxicated when he was hit.

No charges are pending against the driver.

Route 199 eastbound was closed for several hours while state police investigated the accident.

This is so very tragic for EVERYONE involved.

My condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Stewart.

Also, my sympathies to the driver of the pick-up truck -- I can't imagine how they must be feeling about this terrible accident.
