WJCC Appoints New Leaders At Three SchoolsBy Amber Lester Thursday, July 22, 2010 Three Williamsburg-James City County schools will have new leaders when school starts again in September. Stacia Barreau has been appointed principal of James River Elementary, replacing Lynn Turner, who will lead D.J. Montague Elementary next year. Tracey Jones, a 16-year teaching veteran, will become an assistant principal at Toano Middle School and Joy Martin will serve as assistant principal at Rawls Byrd Elementary.
Barreau brings nine years of administrative experience to James River. She most recently served two years as principal of Aberdeen Elementary School in Hampton. She also has worked as an assistant principal at Dare Elementary, Magruder Elementary and Tabb Middle in York County. Prior to becoming an administrator, Barreau taught special education for four years at Huntington Middle School in Newport News.
Barreau earned her doctorate in 2008 from the College of William and Mary, focusing her studies on educational policy, planning and leadership. She earned a master’s degree in educational administration and supervision from Old Dominion University in 2000 and her bachelor’s degree in psychology and learning and behavior disorders from Hampton University in 1996. Tracey Jones has taught history in WJCC schools since 1999. From 1993 to 1999, she taught third, fourth and fifth grade in York County schools. She possesses a master’s degree in educational administration and leadership from the College of William and Mary and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Longwood College in 1993. She’s a previous recipient of the WJCC Superintendent’s Starfish Award for outstanding service to students, and was a presenter at the 2009 Virginia Supervision and Curriculum Development Conference, where she spoke about effective use of student assessments. Joy Martin comes to WJCC from Henrico County Public Schools, where she was a resource teacher at Skipwith Elementary School for the past two years. She has also taught English as a second language and served as a reading instructor since 2003. Martin spent one year teaching English at Xinzhou Teachers University and Ganzhou Teachers College in China.
Martin earned her master’s degree in educational policy planning and leadership for K-12 administration from The College of William and Mary in 2008. She earned a bachelor’s degree in linguistics and elementary education from William and Mary in 2002. She also has a license in English as a Second Language from Virginia Commonwealth University. While studying at William and Mary, Martin received the School of Education Award for Excellence and the Margie Lee Wygal Award for Excellence in Elementary Education in 2002. She is a member of the Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.
