Triangle Region Leaders Seek More Planning Input

Williamsburg’s Regional Issues Committee will be adding an open forum to its meetings starting this month in order to promote more public input.

Created more than 20 years ago, the RIC reviews recommendations from the Williamsburg Region Commission on Growth. It has 17 voting members and three advisory members who represent local governing bodies and planning commissions as well as other major institutions from the three Triangle localities. Their goal is to engage citizens on the upcoming 2012 Comprehensive Plan process which will coordinate all three local plans.

“Public input has always been key to the work of the Regional Issues Committee, but it is especially important that we find new ways to engage citizens as we begin planning for the 2012 Comprehensive Plan update” said Williamsburg Vice-Mayor Paul Freiling, 2010 Chair of the Committee.

“This will be the first time the three localities will be coordinating the timing of their Comprehensive Plans simultaneously, and we want to encourage citizens to think beyond jurisdictional boundaries as we consider issues that affect our entire region.”

The first meeting with the new format will be July 27 at 8:30 a.m. at the Williamsburg Community Building on Boundary Street.  Items on the agenda include a status report on the implementation of the 1988 recommendations of the Williamsburg Regional Commission on Growth, and more discussion on ways to engage citizens for the upcoming Comprehensive Plan process.

The committee meets quarterly on the fourth Tuesday of January, April, July and October at the Williamsburg Community Building.

The JCC supervisors (I have no clue whether they're Republican, Democratic, or Martian) are involved in another exercise to demonstrate that the Comprehensive Plans ain't worth the paper it's printed on.

Instead of more input, we need more leaders who will do the right thing and stare down greedy developers.

It is a waste of time giving input to these groups. The three JCC Republican Supervisors consistently and recklessly disregard the public's opinion and just go ahead and do whatever they want. All they do is listed to out-of-town builders and they give them whatever they want. Until the JCC Republican Supervisors have been voted out, input to any other local group is sadly meaningless.

The 'open forum' design should yield positive results, if designed and facilitated to solicit input from citizens.
Perhaps the Community Conversation design used by the Citizens For Education to engage and receive community suggestions about Dropout Issues in WJCC schools should be considered for the Comp Plan process.
The design was so successful that the Community Conversation: The Next Superintendent will be held in September. It is designed to help the WJCC Board of Education meet one of the major selection criteria prescribed by the Virginia School Board Association: involve the community in the selection process and receive input about what is expected in the new superintendent.
CFE will be pleased to discuss the design with the RIC.
