It All Starts with Family at Jamboree

Bruton High student Taylor Huber is attending the National Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill with fellow Scouts in Troop 1741. Huber is a hometown correspondent, filing daily dispatches from the field. This is his fourth report.

At the 2010 National Scout Jamboree a Scout’s troop is his family. Just like a normal family it has the parents (Scoutmaster and adult leaders), the big brothers (the troop and patrol leaders) and the little siblings.

Of course each family has an oddball or two but the family cannot work efficiently without all of its members. Just like a normal family, the kids will fight and argue but for 10 days the troop is all they have.

Luckily, Williamsburg’s Troop 1741 has a great group of young men that will do their work when asked.

Troop 1741 is divided into four patrols and most things are handled on a patrol level. Every meal is prepared, eaten and cleaned by patrol. In a patrol each Scout is designated assignments like setting the table, cooking and cleaning.

Hometown reports

Day 1: Arrival

Day 2: Mysterium Compass & more

Day 3: Brushes with Fame

In camp, whenever a Scout goes anywhere they must take a buddy. It is best if the buddies get to know each other by enjoying activities together. The week is much more enjoyable if one has a good relationship with his buddy.

Some of the best times at the 2010 National Scout Jamboree happen right inside the campsite. At the campsite Scouts from Williamsburg’s Troop 1741 discuss their day as well as their plans. They also have the opportunity to write letters home or call their family.

Troop 1741 also has the opportunity to eat snacks sent to Carter Socha by his mother, and for this the whole troop is grateful.

Carter said, “ I would like to give a shout out to my mother, and say thanks and I love her.”

So whether it be rain or shine Williamsburg’s Troop 1741 will have a good time.
