Residents Safe after Early Morning House Fire in JCC

No one was injured during an early morning fire today that broke out in a house that had just one working smoke detector.

James City County firefighters were called to 3016 Mossy Creek Drive in the Berkeley's Green neighborhood around 4:30 a.m. The first units to arrive found fire in the attached garage; all the home's occupants were outside and safe.

Firefighters had contained the blaze and put out the garage fire by just before 5 a.m., although smoke remained throughout the house.

While the residents were able to escape because of the single detector, firefighters did have to rescue several small pets. No injuries to either occupants or firefighters were reported.

The James City County Fire Marshal's Office investigated the fire, and found it had been caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross responded to assist the family.
