James City County police say a shooting Wednesday morning outside the food court at the Prime Outlets was the result of a "drug deal gone bad."

Two men have been detained, and one is likely to be released without charges.

The other, Rashaun Chapman, a 21-year-old Newport News man, has been charged with discharging a firearm in public, reckless handling of a firearm and brandishing a firearm. According to James City County police spokeswoman Stephanie Williams-Ortery, police believe Chapman and a companion were meeting a third person for a drug exchange shortly after 9 a.m.

"It’s unclear, at this time, what exactly unfolded, but it was at that time that Mr. Chapman fired shots," the spokeswoman said.

Police received a call of shots fired near the mall's food court around 9:15 a.m., Williams-Ortery said, but when they arrived could find no evidence of anyone - or anything - injured or damaged. They did however, recover several shell casings from the scene, but no further information was available on the type of gun used.

There were no apparent injuries as a result of the shooting.

The Department is asking that any witnesses or anyone who may have seen a blue sedan in the area Wednesday morning around 9 a.m. contact Investigator Pennycuff at 757-259-5163.

The mall and food court opened as usual at 10 a.m.

Nothing says "Back to School" like a good gun fight at the mall.

Were the drugs in question discounted or last season's? The buyer may have realized that outlet pricing is really a sham. :P

I was at the Mall at 9:30 to use the facilities. Didn't see the hubbub. :-*
