The James City County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating an early morning fire Saturday that destroyed a single-family home in the Temple Hall subdivision in the western part of the county. Preliminary indications are the fire was accidental.

A neighbor noticed the fire, already raging through the roof of the home at 139 Norman Davis Drive, around 5:45 a.m. and called firefighters. The residents were out of town on vacation and the house was not occupied.

On the scene were firefighters from the James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department along with the James City and York counties' fire departments.

Volunteer department spokesman Bill Apperson said the fire was under control within 15 minutes of the arrival of the first engine company, but the fire "had a long burn time before discovery." Half of the home was destroyed by fire; the other half - and all the possessions inside - was destroyed by heat and smoke damage, he said.

The family is able to stay with relatives in the Williamsburg area, Apperson said, so did not require assistance from the local chapter of the American Red Cross.
