The James City County Fire Marshal's office is investigating a late afternoon fire that damaged a two-story home in Toano Thursday.

The James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire in the 7600 block of Crestview Drive in the Toano Trace subdivision around 4:43 p.m. The first arriving engine, on the scene about six minutes later, reported fire showing from a second story window.

Firefighters had the fire under control within eight minutes of arrival. The initial attack was made by an interior crew, with two back-up crews ready. Firefighters from the county's full-time department also responded.

JCBVFD spokesman Bill Apperson said the fire started in a bedroom, which was totally destroyed. The rest of the home suffered heavy heat and smoke damage, with losses estimated around $25,000.

The homeowner was away and the house unoccupied when the fire broke out. There were no injuries reported.

The affected family will live with relatives, with assistance by the Red Cross if necessary.
