We're deep into the fall road construction and maintenance season. VDOT issues a look at the week ahead, and this week that includes a four-hour bridge closure on the James River Bridge. All closures are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen events.

YORK COUNTY
I-64 East/West – Motorists should expect single lane closures at the Route 143 overpass for bridge deck repairs, Sunday, October 3, though Thursday, October 7, from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
NEWPORT NEWS/HAMPTONI-664 North/South – Motorists should expect single mobile lane closures from the I-64 Interchange (Exit 1) to Warwick Boulevard/35th Street (Exit 5) for paving operations and ramp marking, Sunday, October 3, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-664 North/South – Motorists should expect single mobile lane closures from Warwick Boulevard/35th Street (Exit 5) to 25th/26th Street (Exit 6) for pavement marker inspection, Thursday, October 7, and Friday, October 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-664 North – Motorists should expect single mobile lane closures from Warwick Boulevard/35th Street (Exit 5) to the I-64 Interchange (Exit 1) for pavement marking, Monday, October 4, through Thursday, October 7, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-64 West – Motorists should expect lane closures at the Hampton River Bridge for bridge safety inspection, Monday, October 4, through Wednesday, October 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesday, October 5, through Friday, October 8, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-64 East – Motorists should expect lane closures from Hampton Roads Center Parkway (Exit 261) for sign safety inspection, Sunday, October 3, and Monday, October 4, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-64 East/West – Motorists should expect mobile lane closures at the Route 173 Denbigh Boulevard overpass for bridge safety inspection, Tuesday, October 5, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
JAMES RIVER BRIDGERoute 17 North/South – The James River Bridge will be closed to all vehicular traffic for four hours beginning Thursday, October 7, at midnight and reopening at 4 a.m. Friday, October 8, for stop gate testing. Motorists should use an alternate route during the bridge closure.
Route 17 North - Motorists should expect mobile lane closures for sign and signal inspection, Monday, October 4, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Route 17 South - Motorists should expect mobile lane closures for sign and signal inspection and fiber optic installation, Monday, October 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Route 17 South - Motorists should expect a single lane closure fiber optic installation, Tuesday, October 5, through Friday, October 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Route 17 North/South – Motorists should expect alternating mobile lane closures for for bridge safety inspection, Monday, October 4, through Friday, October 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Route 17 North – Motorists should expect alternating mobile lane closures for equipment positioning, Sunday, October 3, through Thursday, October 7, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Route 17 South – Motorists should expect single, alternating lane closures on the James River Bridge for beam end repairs, Sunday, October 3, through Thursday, October 7, from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.
HAMPTON ROADS BRIDGE-TUNNELI-64 East – Motorist should expect overnight single lane closures Sunday, October 3, to Thursday, October 7, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for the roadway lighting upgrade to the I-64 East Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Westbound traffic will not be affected and no weekend closures are planned. The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2011. Motorists are encouraged to use I-664 Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel to avoid delays. Take Exit 264 to access I-664. Use exit 15A for Norfolk and Virginia Beach destinations. I-64 West – Motorists should expect single right lane closures starting on the southwest bridge proceeding through the tunnel and ending on the north island, for tile and grate repair, Sunday, October 3, through Thursday, October 7, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
DOWNTOWN TUNNEL
I-264 East/West – Motorists should expect mobile alternating lane closures in the Downtown Tunnel for tunnel sweeping, Tuesday, October 5, and Friday, October 8, from midnight to 4 a.m.
I-264 East – Motorists should expect a single lane closure through the Downtown Tunnel for joint expansion rehabilitation, Sunday, October 3, through Friday, October 8, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
MIDTOWN TUNNEL
Route 58 East – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures through the Midtown Tunnel for drainage maintenance, Sunday, October 3, through Thursday, October 7, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
NORFOLK
I-64 West HOV Reversible Roadway – Motorists should expect multiple lane closures at the I-264 Interchange in the Reversible Roadway system for overhead sign maintenance, Sunday, October 4, and Tuesday, October 5, from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.
I-64 West – Motorists should expect single lane closures at 15th View for pavement repair, Tuesday, October 5, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-64 West – Motorists should expect single lane closures at 4th View for pavement repair, Wednesday, October 6, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-64 West – Motorists should expect a right lane closure at the I-264 Interchange along with an Exit Ramp (Exit 284A) closure for soil test boring, Sunday, October 3, through Thursday, October 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

I-564 West – Motorists should expect a single lane closures at Terminal Boulevard for guardrail repairs, Sunday, October 3, from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Hampton Boulevard Grading Project
Motorists should expect a traffic shift on Hampton Boulevard onto a newly created detour road. The six-lane detour roadway was constructed as part of the Hampton Boulevard Grade Separation Project. The detour road will provide access to both NIT and NAS facilities, while maintaining the same vehicle capacity as the current Hampton Boulevard.
Ballentine Boulevard North/South at I-264 overpass– Motorists should expect the alternating lane closures on Ballentine Boulevard at the I-264 overpass/Westminster Avenue intersection for overpass cleaning, sandblasting and painting, seven days a week from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. through September 2010. Daytime weekend lane closures may also affect traffic.
PORTSMOUTH
I-264 East/West – Motorists should expect single mobile lane closures between Greenwood Drive (Exit 2) and Des Moines Avenue (Exit 6) for sign safety inspection, Sunday, October 3, and Monday, October 4, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
CHESAPEAKE
I-64 East/West Restorative Pavement Project – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures from the Bowers Hill Interchange to the I-464 Interchange, Monday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for restorative pavement maintenance work. Work will include patching isolated concrete pavement, increasing the width of the inside shoulder and replacing two lifts of asphalt. These paving operations will continue Sunday through Thursday until the end of August 2011.
I-64 East – Motorists should expect single lane closures at Battlefield Boulevard for guardrail repair, Monday, October 4, from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.
I-464 North – Motorists should expect single lane closures between I-64 and Military Highway for slope repair, Monday, October 4, and Tuesday, October 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
I-464 North – Motorists should expect single lane closures at the I-64 interchange for overhead sign maintenance, Wednesday, October 6, and Thursday, October 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
I-464 North – Motorists should expect multiple lane closures at Military Highway at the Barnes Road overpass for overhead sign maintenance, Thursday, October 7, and Friday, October 8, from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.
I-64 East/West – Motorists should expect multiple alternating lane closures from I-264 Interchange (Exit 299) to Battlefield Boulevard (Exit 290) for guardrail repair, drainage improvements and paving operations, Sunday, October 3, through Friday, October 8, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Motorists should be alert for detours associated with on- and off-ramp closures. Motorists should also expect shoulder closures.
Mt. Pleasant Road South – Motorists should expect a westbound road closures at the intersection of Mt. Pleasant Road and Fentress Airfield Road for utility relocation operations, Monday, October 4, through Thursday, October 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Motorists should be alert for flagging operations.
GILMERTON BRIDGE
Route 13 - Motorists may experience traffic delays due to daytime flagging operations in the project work zone, stopping traffic in both directions for up to 10 minutes.
Motorists are asked to use extreme caution as work crews repair barrier walls on the traffic side of the wall.
Motorists are encouraged to use the I-64 High Rise Bridge as an alternative route to avoid delays. For more information, please visit the project website.
CHESAPEAKE/SUFFOLK
I-664 North/South – Motorists should expect single mobile alternating lane closures between the Bowers Hill I-64/264 Interchange (Exit 15) and the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel for paving operations and guardrail upgrades, Sunday, October 3, through Thursday, October 7, from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m.
VIRGINIA BEACH
I-264 East – Motorists should expect mobile lane closures at Lynnhaven Parkway (Exit 19) for pavement marking and concrete barrier placement, Monday, October 4, through Friday, October 8, from 8 p.m. to 5a.m. Motorists should be alert for detours as a result of ramp closures associated with the work.
I-264 East/West – Motorists should expect ramp closures at Independence Boulevard (Exit 17), Rosemont Road (Exit 18), Lynnhaven Parkway (Exit 19) Birdneck Road (Exit 22), First Colonial Road (Exit 21) for pavement markings, Monday, October 4, and Tuesday, October 5, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-264 East/West – Motorists should expect mobile alternating lane closures from Newtown Road (Exit 15) to Rosemont Road (Exit 18) for roadway sweeping, Monday, October 4, through Friday, October 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Witchduck Road North/South –Motorists should expect single lane closures from Bonney Road to the I-264 Interchange on Witchduck Road and at Anvers Road and Witchduck Road for asphalt demolition, Monday, October 4, through Friday, October 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
SUFFOLK
I-664 North – Motorists should expect multiple lane closures at College Drive for overhead sign maintenance, Tuesday, October 5, and Wednesday, October 6, from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Motorists should be alert for detours as a result of on-ramp closures associated with the repairs.
SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY/SUSSEX COUNTY/ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY
Route 460 East/West – Motorists should expect alternating mobile lane closures from the Southampton/Isle of Wight County line to the Prince George County line for pavement marker inspection, Sunday, October 3, through Saturday, October 9, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY
Route 10 East/West – Motorists should expect lane closures on Route 10 for guardrail repairs, Monday, October 4, from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Route 671 North/South – Motorists should expect alternating lane and shoulder closures at the intersection of Route 671 and Route 650 for guardrail repairs, Friday, October 8, from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
