York Investigators Say Surrender Rd. Attack on Motorist Didn't Happen

York County sheriff's investigators have charged a 37-year-old Newport News woman who claimed to have suffered a late-night beating and robbery on a remote Yorktown battlefield road with filing a false police report.

Police found a very distraught woman just before midnight on Sept. 9 on Surrender Road, a rural byway that cuts through the Yorktown battlefield. She claimed to be lost when her tire pressure warning light flicked on and she pulled over to check for a flat.

The woman said a car pulled up with two men who offered to help. Instead, she claimed, they struck her in the head, kicked her to the ground and stole her purse.

She was unable to provide a description either of the car or the alleged attackers.

Sheriff's department spokesman Sgt. Dennis Ivey, Jr. said the charge, a misdemeanor, was filed against the woman "after an extensive investigation."

Any idea why she was so distraught and was that due to some traumatic event?
