Citizen Group Hosts Talk On Stormwater Vote

JCCStormwaterVoteLogoRepresentatives from James City County will talk about the upcoming $30 million stormwater referendum vote at a meeting Wednesday hosted by a local citizen group.

On Election Day, residents will vote on whether the county will be able to issue up to $30 million in general obligation bonds to pay for a backlog of critical stormwater projects.

Wednesday’s meeting, sponsored by the James City County Citizens Coalition, will feature a talk on the referendum and a question-and-answer session with Fran Geissler, director of the county’s stormwater division, and John McDonald, the county’s financial manager.

The county needs the funds to repair aging stormwater infrastructure, meet stricter state and federal requirements, protect residents’ property from runoff and maintain water quality. Supervisors have discussed the possibility of raising real estate taxes by up to two cents per $100 of value in order to cover the debt, which would be about $60 a year for a home valued at $300,000.

Visit the county’s website on the referendum question that features information on why the county needs the money, what sort of projects they’ll be doing, a map of the projects and how the referendum works.
