Local Trick-or-Treat Hours

Take note of the local hours for trick-or-treating so the ghosts, zombies and pint-sized Lady Gagas in your house have a ready answer to their constant query today: "Is it time to go trick-or-treat?"

In James City County, the hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Children 12 and under may participate.

In York County, hours are from dusk to 8 p.m. today. (Technically - we did check - dusk today means 6:11 p.m.) Again, children 12 and under may make the rounds.

In Williamsburg proper, hours are from 6 to 8 p.m., with children 12 and under allowed to trick-or-treat.

Local police encourage trick-or-treaters to carry flashlights or have reflective tape on their costumes, particularly in neighborhoods without many streetlights. Younger children should not trick-or-treat alone, and parents should be sure to have their children visit homes where neighbors known to them live.

For residents, remember the Halloween etiquette: You want the kids to come ring the bell, you leave the light on. You want them to stay away, keep it dark.

If teenagers make a costume and trick-or-treat respectfully, they should be allowed to participate. Why do they get kicked out? They often come up with the cleverest costumes.

Boo on the localities for trying to dis-include and kick out our good, law-abiding teenagers...whi ch are most of them.
