Federal Stimulus Funds at Work on James City Roads

James City County has become a very busy place for roadwork in the last few days.

The Board of Supervisors has appropriated an additional $304,287 to the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) Asphalt Overlay/Resurfacing projects, which brings the total federal stimulus funds allocating to resurfacing local roads to $839,708. No County funds are being used for this project.

The County has awarded a contract to Branscome, Inc. for asphalt overlays for portions of Olde Towne Road, Strawberry Plains Road and part of Lake Powell Road. The additional funds will cover work on approximately 1.2 miles of Ironbound Road beginning at Mid County Park and ending at Five Forks.

The project schedule has been designed to reduce the impact on the public and to complete much of the work prior to Black Friday and the start of the holiday shopping season.

The roadwork schedule is as follows, so plan your local trips accordingly:

  • Lake Powell Road: Scheduled to finish Nov. 14.
  • Olde Towne Road: In progress, scheduled to finish Nov. 21.
  • Strawberry Plains Road: Begins Nov. 16, scheduled to finish Nov. 21, with some night work required.
  • Ironbound Road: Begins Nov. 16, scheduled to finish Nov. 30.

I understand everyone has something to say about the stimulus money, shopping schedule and other roads that need to be tended to. But let's please not forget that the people along those roads, particularly Ironbound Road have not been compensated for the land that was taken from them for this construction. Nor were they included in notice of the timeline of construction, they are finding out in the paper and on the net with everyone else. There are often times I ride by the houses of those people and wonder how they must feel to have tractors in their yards where beautiful trees and lawns once were. Sometimes, they can’t even get in and out of their driveways and have been inconvenienced beyond measure. The city keeps making them empty promises and stating that this is to support 20,000 cars a day on Ironbound. I am not sure if anyone else has driven down Richmond Road between High St. and Bypass Road, but that might be a good place to focus some energy and look for 20,000 cars a day. But in the mean time, I think that the city (DOT) could at least pay for what they have taken and do right by all citizens and not just some. I know allot of those people would like for Williamsburg to progress and keep up with their neighboring communities, but at what cost is it okay to destroy someone's home and who will be next.

For all the "socialist money" rhetoric out there please read this article about the federal debt: http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2010/11/where-did-our-debt-come-from/66530/
Be sure to recall the political party associated with each presidential administration. ..

To Taxed Enough Already: Please stay off of our commonly-owned roads since you no longer wish to assist their maintenance. And please refrain from our public buildings, post offices, schools, EMS, Social Security, Medicare, etc, all of which cost reasonable money to sustain. Maybe you want to move to Siberia where you can live completely free and unfettered? Sharron Angle and Christine O'Donnell are there waiting for you!! :P

I'm no economist but I have heard and read whee the so-called stimulus cost thousands of dollars more then the jobs it's supposed to create. It's good to see our tax dollars at work but let's not get all excited about this stimulus package. It's costing a heck of a lot more the benefits it provides.

The holiday shopping season starts Veteran's Day weekend, and to start construction on Olde Town Road next to the outlets on a Saturday was poor planning. The traffic was bad to begin with and the construction just made it worse.

How about a little love for Old News Rd behind Martins? That section isn't very long but it's well-traveled and in terrible shape...
