Rabid Fox Found On Hickory Sign Post Road

A fox spotted in James City County has tested positive for rabies.

The fox was spotted in the 4800 block of Hickory Sign Post Road. Anyone having information regarding exposure to the animal, such as a bite, scratch or contact with saliva by an open wound, eyes, nose or mouth, should contact the Health Department at 757-253-4813. Exposures also include contact between your pet and the rabid animal. After hours, call Animal Control at 757-253-1800.

The local office of Environmental Health Services will be contacting the immediate neighbors, as well as any civic or homeowner’s association in the area. The Peninsula Health District recommends citizens prevent rabies by vaccinating pets, reporting all exposure to animals and not feeding or encouraging wild animals onto property.
