Lafayette Students Win State One-Act Competition

Lafayette won for its performance of "Over the River and Through the Woods."
Lafayette High School’s one-act play team proved practice makes perfect when the school won its first statewide competition last week.

In four years, the school’s one-act participants have climbed through the ranks from fourth place four years ago to first place this year. The Ram drama students completed their climb to win the state championship with their production of “Over The River and Through the Woods,” with cast member Alison Hummel named “Best Actor.” The one-act competition was on Dec. 6 in Charlottesville.

The team is led by drama instructor Suzan McCorry, who joined Lafayette’s staff four years ago. Lafayette Athletic Director Dan Barner praised her leadership in a press release. “Since coming to Lafayette High School four years ago, Suzan McCorry has developed a theater program that is second to none in the state,” he said. “The cast and crew of ‘Over the River and Through the Woods’ did what no other Lafayette one-act play team has ever done in the AA classification: Brought home a state championship.”

The play focuses on family loyalty through the eyes of Nick, a young marketing exec dealing with two sets of Italian grandparents who attempt to keep him from moving to Seattle for a promotion. McCorry said she wanted to find a good-quality play for her students to perform and estimates looking through about 200 plays before settling on “Over the River and Through the Woods.”

“At every level of the competition, all the judges during their critiques said that this was a very mature play that we performed, and that they were always surprised that high school students could pull it off,” she said. “I’m just really happy, especially for our seniors, most of whom have been with me since they were freshmen. Everyone has worked really hard to get to this point. They deserved this trophy.”

Perhaps once the economy improves, we can budget for an extra act in the play.

BRAVO...BRAVO, Lafayette drama students!! This guy especially admires the fact that "you all", one year at a time, kept on keeping on, moving up with experiences and kudos to E-A-R-N your state-wide HONOR...that fact is the one that counts!
