WHMA To Sponsor Triathlon In September

The Williamsburg Hotel & Motel Association will sponsor a triathlon expected to bring 1,600 athletes to the Historic Triangle next fall.

The WHMA announced Tuesday that it will sponsor the Patriots Triathlon Weekend for the weekend of Sept. 10-11. Registration for the event begins Jan. 5.

“We are thrilled with our new partner, the Williamsburg Hotel & Motel Association, serving as the Patriots Weekend Presenting Sponsor,” said Greg Hawkins, race director. “This event is a true partnership between Set Up Events and James City County, which has been on board with the event since inception, and now the Williamsburg Hotel & Motel Association and the Greater Williamsburg Tourist Information Center.”

Participants will compete on Sept. 10 in a half-iron distance triathlon with a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike race and 13.1-mile foot race. On Sept. 11, athletes will compete in a sprint triathlon, beginning with a 750-meter swim in the James River, followed by a 12-mile ride along Route 5, and finished with a 5k run on an asphalt path.

“We are thrilled to be working with Greg Hawkins and the Patriots to provide the best our area has to offer for these sporting events,” said Priscilla Caldwell, director of operations of the WHMA, in a press release.

this will be my comeback race! After crashing in the race last year and breaking my neck. I plan to return to this race to finish what I started!

Thank God!! These are the kinds of events that our area is perfect for. We have such beautiful facilities and natural assets in the area that can be leveraged to bring more economic stimulus to our area. We don't need government handouts, we just need to work together to create our own stimulus. Kudos to James City County, Williamsburg Hotel & Motel Assoc and the new Greater Williamsburg Visitor Information Center staffs for being Collaborative, finally.

Kudos to WHMA and GWTIC for getting involved with this event. It is yet another example of how these organizations are playing an active role to improve exposure and visitation of our area along with providing local residents with an opportunity to compete in a first class event. Keep it going!!
