Parkway Tunnel To Close For Repairs In January

A tunnel on the Colonial Parkway will be closed to traffic for maintenance for four days in January.

The tunnel, which runs beneath the Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg, will be closed from Jan. 10 to 14 to allow National Park Service personnel to perform routine maintenance, including the replacement of overhead lights and cleaning the roadway.

The Park Service and Williamsburg have established a marked detour route that will run through England Street, Lafayette Street, Henry Street and Newport Avenue during that week.

Routine maintenance to the tunnel is performed twice a year. The work is planned for January because it will minimize the impact on park visitors and local residents, according to a press release from the Park Service.

It's probably directly below the substantial dip in the road on DOG St, in front of the court house in CW. That dip has deepened substantially, in recent years!

Suggestion...ne xt time you drive either way through the tunnel, SLOWLY, look up to the curved ceiling in the middle area. Notice what appears to be an opening in that roof. It is!
