Christmas has finally arrived, which means Colonial Williamsburg’s annual tree lighting ceremony is ready to help folks kick off the holiday celebrations.

The community is invited to gather at the Courthouse on Duke of Gloucester Street at 5:30 p.m. Friday for the annual ceremony.

The program will begin with a reading of “The Night Before Christmas” and will be followed by carol singing.

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg will participate, and Mayor Clyde Haulman will officially flip the switch to light the 35-foot tree. Members of the Kiwanis and the City of Williamsburg have co-sponsored the lighting of the tree on Market Square since 1959.

The ceremony is free of charge.

Merchants Square will also be hosting some events on Christmas Eve, if you’d like to make a day of it. An Old-Time Santa will be strolling the streets from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., the Trellis restaurant will have a jazz performance from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., and the Kimball Theater will feature the variety show “A Grand Medley of Entertainment” at 7:30 p.m.

Visit the Merchants Square website for details.
