VDOT Lane Closure Forecast: Dec. 26-Jan. 1By WYDaily Staff Sunday, December 26, 2010 In an effort to keep you informed, VDOT publishes the following scheduled highway lane closures that may affect traffic in Hampton Roads. These closures are subject to change due to weather conditions and other unforeseen events. Other closures may occur which do not appear on this report.VDOT will remove temporary work zones on major roads to provide a clear path for holiday travelers to reach their destinations over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Beginning noon Thursday, Dec. 23, until noon Monday, Dec. 27, and from noon Thursday, Dec. 30, until noon Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, no additional lane closures will be established for construction or maintenance activities on Virginia’s major roads except for those needed to deal with emergency road repairs. NEWPORT NEWS I-64 West – Motorists should expect multiple lane closures at the J. Clyde Morris Interchange on the eastern overpass bridge approach including the I-64 westbound on-ramp for concrete pavement inspection, Tuesday, December 28, and Wednesday, December 29, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Route 143 North/South – Motorists should expect multiple alternating lane and shoulder closures at Buchanan Road for digital traffic system installation, Tuesday, December 28, and Wednesday, December 29, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. HAMPTON ROADS BRIDGE-TUNNEL I-64 East – Motorists should expect overnight single lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. during non-restricted holiday hours for the roadway lighting upgrade to the I-64 East Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Westbound traffic will not be affected and no weekend closures are planned. The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2011. Motorists are encouraged to use I-664 Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel to avoid delays. Take Exit 264 to access I-664. Use exit 15A for Norfolk and Virginia Beach destinations. MONITOR-MERRIMAC MEMORIAL BRIDGE-TUNNEL I-664 South – Motorists should expect a single lane closure in the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel for tunnel washing, Monday, December 27, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. DOWNTOWN TUNNEL I-264 East/West – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures in the Downtown Tunnel for tunnel washing operations, Wednesday, December 29, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. I-264 East/West – Motorists should expect mobile alternating lane closures in the Downtown Tunnel for tunnel sweeping operations, Tuesday, December 28, from midnight to 4 a.m. MIDTOWN TUNNEL Route 58 East/West – Motorists should expect mobile alternating lane closures in the Midtown Tunnel for tunnel washing operations, Tuesday, December 28, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. NORFOLK I-64 East/West – Motorists should expect mobile lane closures from the I-264 Interchange to 15th View for pothole repairs, Monday, December 27, through Wednesday, December 29, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Hampton Boulevard Grading Project Motorists should expect a traffic shift on Hampton Boulevard onto a newly created detour road. The six-lane detour roadway was constructed as part of the Hampton Boulevard Grade Separation Project. The detour road will provide access to both NIT and NAS facilities, while maintaining the same vehicle capacity as the current Hampton Boulevard. PORTSMOUTH/NORFOLK/VIRGINIA BEACH I-264 East/West – Motorists should expect mobile lane closures from Greenwood Drive to Birdneck Road for bridge deck sweeping operations, Monday, December 27, through Wednesday, December 29, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. CHESAPEAKE I-64 East/West Restorative Pavement Project – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures from the Bowers Hill Interchange to the I-464 Interchange, Tuesday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for restorative pavement maintenance work. Work will include patching isolated concrete pavement, increasing the width of the inside shoulder and replacing two lifts of asphalt. These paving operations will continue Sunday through Thursday until the end of August 2011. I-464 North – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures from the I-64 Interchange to the I-264 Interchange for overhead sign maintenance, Tuesday, December 28, and Wednesday, December 29, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. GILMERTON BRIDGE Route 13 East/West – Motorists should expect daytime closures include flagging operations in the project work zone, stopping traffic in both directions for up to 10 minutes. Motorists are asked to use extreme caution as work crews repair barrier walls on the traffic side of the wall. Motorists are encouraged to use the I-64 High Rise Bridge as an alternative route to avoid delays. For more information, please visit the project website.
