Legislators to Discuss Upcoming General Assembly Session, Priorities

The Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance will host its annual Pre-General Assembly Forum Friday morning to review upcoming legislation which impacts the Historic Triangle.

Sen. Tommy Norment (R-3rd), Del. Robin Abbott (D-93rd), Del. Bill Barlow (D-64th), and Del. Brenda Pogge (R-96th) will discuss their positions on legislative issues that affect the Triangle. The meeting, which will be moderated by Mark Duncan, the chair of the Alliance’s Government Affairs Committee, will feature questions based on the regional legislative agenda developed jointly by the Alliance and the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce.

The two chambers partnered on legislative issues for the first time in 2009 and made tourism a regional legislative priority.

“We are encouraged by the strong pro-tourism stance and support being expressed by the Governor, and will again advocate to our legislators the need for dedicated and increased funding for tourism marketing and promotion, as well as the establishment of a Tourism Development Fund, to help maintain the vitality of Virginia as a destination,” said Dick Schreiber, Alliance president and CEO.

“Both our chamber organizations are committed to underscoring the importance of tourism to the health of our state and local economies, and to the many businesses – especially small businesses – that comprise the tourism sector.

“Transportation, too, continues to be a critical priority for virtually all our members and every business sector,” said Schreiber. “Infrastructure ensuring the efficient movement of people, goods and services is essential to a favorable business climate, economic development, and quality of life. Meaningful, long-term solutions for transportation in our region and throughout the Commonwealth cannot wait, and we urge every member of the General Assembly to demonstrate leadership in tacking this issue.”

The program begins at 7:30 a.m. in the amphitheater of the Crowne Plaza Williamsburg at Fort Magruder, and is free and open to the public with advance registration. Call 229-6511 to register.

There are certainly many issues facing legislators, among which I believe the most important is the quiksotic threat to the Affordable Healthcare Act.
Before anyone goes about shouting "repeal!" it seems that our representatives should read the Act and find out what is being accomplished since it was passed. Then weigh carefully the advantages for all of their constituents, not just those backlash types with loud voices. Tread carefully before much well researched work and hard to achieve measures are placed "asunder".

I hope our Virginia General Assembly will follow Congress' lead and get rid of all ceremonial resolutions that are huge wastes of time and money. We don't need "Virginia Massage Therapy Day" to be proclaimed or special "Don't Tread on Me" license plates, either. Those boys and girls in Richmond have much more important things to do.
