Barnes Road Fire Sends Resident to Hospital

A fire that started accidentally while a resident was cooking sent a James City County woman to the hospital with burn injuries and caused significant damage to the home.

Firefighters were called to a single-family home in the 9400 block of Barnes Road in the James City County Stonehouse District around 2:11 p.m. Wednesday. Eight fire and EMS units from the county and James City-Bruton Volunteer departments arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the home.

Firefighters quickly realized the fire had spread to the roof line, and entered the home to knock down the blaze, which was quickly extinguished.

The structure received heavy damage to the family room and kitchen area with significant smoke and heat damage throughout the remainder of the structure, which rendered it uninhabitable. Virginia Power workers responded and secured power to the entire structure.

According to JCCFD District Chief Bob Ryalls, a female resident received non-life threatening burns and was transported by ambulance to the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond.

Ryalls said family representatives declined Red Cross assistance.

The James City County Fire Marshal’s Office wrapped up its investigation of the fire's cause, Ryalls said, and determined it to be accidental in nature due to cooking.
