Motorist Strikes, Kills Yorktown Man on Pocahontas Tr.

A Yorktown man was killed Thursday morning on Pocahontas Trail near the Grove area of James City County after being struck by a car driven by an 82-year-old Williamsburg woman.

James City County police are investigating the fatality, which occurred at 10:10 in the 9300 block of Pocahontas Trail.

A police spokesman said Ralph Newman Jr., a 55-year-old from Yorktown, was operating a 1997 Ford dump truck registered to his Seaford company, Newman Hauling, east on Pocahontas Trail when he pulled his vehicle off onto the shoulder of the roadway.

"For some unknown reason, he exited the truck and was struck by a 1992 Volvo driven by Mildred Drews of Williamsburg," James City police Maj. Steve Rubino said in a release.

Rubino said Drews' Volvo sideswiped the dump truck and struck Newman.

The injured man was airlifted to Norfolk General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Drews was not injured in the crash.

Rubino said the crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.

Pocahontas Trail was closed for most of the day in both directions between Greenmount Parkway and the Newport News City line.
