It's still winter, but road construction in this area has no season. Be prepared for lane closures on bridges and state highways that likely will affect Hampton Roads traffic. In an effort to keep you informed, VDOT publishes the following scheduled highway lane closures; these closures are subject to change due to weather conditions and other unforeseen events. Other closures may occur that do not appear on this report.

JAMES RIVER BRIDGERoute 17 South – Motorists should expect multiple lane closures on the James River Bridge for beam end repair, Monday, January 24, through Friday, January 28, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, January 23, through Thursday, January 27, from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Route 17 North – Motorists should expect multiple lane closures on the James River Bridge for equipment staging Monday, January 24, through Friday, January 28, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
HAMPTON ROADS BRIDGE-TUNNELI-64 East – Motorist should expect overnight single lane closures Monday through Thursday, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for the roadway lighting upgrade to the I-64 East Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Westbound traffic will not be affected and no weekend closures are planned. The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2011.
Motorists are encouraged to use I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel to avoid delays. Take Exit 264 to access I-664. Use exit 15A for Norfolk and Virginia Beach destinations. Use exit 15B for Chesapeake and Outer Banks destinations.

I-64 West – Motorists should expect single lane closures for maintenance operations and overhead sign repair, Sunday, January 23, and Wednesday, January 26, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
HAMPTON/NORFOLK/VIRGINIA BEACH
I-64 East/West – Motorists should expect mobile, alternating lane closures from Mallory to the I-264 Interchange for pothole repairs, Monday, January 24, through Friday, January 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
DOWNTOWN TUNNEL
I-264 West – Motorists should expect single, mobile, alternating lane closures for tunnel sweeping, Tuesday, January 25, and Friday, January 28, from midnight to 5 a.m.
I-264 East – Motorists should expect single, alternating lane closures for drain cleaning, Sunday, January 23, through Thursday, January 27, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
NORFOLK
Hampton Boulevard Grading Project
Motorists should expect a traffic shift on Hampton Boulevard onto a newly created detour road. The six-lane detour roadway was constructed as part of the Hampton Boulevard Grade Separation Project. The detour road will provide access to both NIT and NAS facilities, while maintaining the same vehicle capacity as the current Hampton Boulevard.
CHESAPEAKE/NORFOLK/VIRGINIA BEACH
I-64 East/West – Motorists should expect alternating mobile lane closures from the High Rise Bridge to Norview Avenue for pothole repairs, Sunday, January 23, through Thursday, January 27, from 9 p.m. through 5 a.m.
CHESAPEAKE
I-64 East/West Restorative Pavement Project – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures from the Bowers Hill Interchange to the I-464 Interchange, Monday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for restorative pavement maintenance work. Work will include patching isolated concrete pavement, increasing the width of the inside shoulder and replacing two lifts of asphalt. These paving operations will continue Sunday through Thursday until the end of August 2011.
I-64 East/West – Motorists should expect multiple, alternating lane closures at Battlefield Boulevard for shoulder restoration and guardrail repair, Monday, January 24, through Friday, January 28, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Motorists should be alert for on and off ramp closures.
I-464 North – Motorists should expect multiple lane closures at the Barnes Road Overpass for overhead sign repairs, Tuesday, January 25, and Wednesday, January 26, from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.
I-464 North – Motorists should expect mobile lane closures between Freeman Avenue and Poindexter Street, for bridge repairs, Monday, January 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
I-664 North – Motorists should expect multiple lane closures at Military Highway for overhead sign repairs, Thursday, January 27, and Friday, January 28, from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.
Mount Pleasant Road North – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures at Fentress Airfield Road for clearing associated with lane widening, Monday, January 24, through Thursday, January 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
GILMERTON BRIDGE
Route 13 East/West – Motorists should expect daytime closures including flagging operations in the project work zone, stopping traffic in both directions for up to 10 minutes.
Motorists are asked to use extreme caution as work crews repair barrier walls on the traffic side of the wall.

HIGH RISE BRIDGE
I-64 East/West – Motorists should expect single lane closures between the Route 17 and Route 199 Interchanges for survey operations, Monday, January 24, eastbound, Tuesday, January 25, westbound, and Wednesday, January 26, east and westbound, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-64 East/West – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures on the High Rise Bridge for steel grid deck inspection, Saturday, January 29, from 7:30 a.m. to noon. In the event of inclement weather, the inspection will be moved to Sunday, January 30.
CHESAPEAKE/SUFFOLK
I-664 North/South – Motorists should expect single alternating lane closures between the Bowers Hill Interchange and the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel for guardrail repairs and construction maintenance activities, Sunday, January 23, through Thursday, January 27, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
PORTSMOUTH
I-264 West – Motorists should expect multiple lane closures at Frederick Boulevard for overhead sign maintenance, Wednesday, January 26, and Thursday, January 27, from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.
I-264 East/West – Motorists should expect mobile lane closures at Greenwood Drive for bridge repairs, Monday, January 24, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesday, January 25, through Friday, January 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Southampton Parkway West – Motorists should expect a single lane closure on Southampton Parkway for right turn lane installation, Monday, January 24, through Friday, January 28, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
