Carter's Grove Owner in Default; CW to Sell Property at Auction

CW-CartersGroveCarter’s Grove will be up for auction on February 15 because owner and CNet founder Halsey Minor has failed to pay his mortgage to Colonial Williamsburg, and has stopped paying county taxes on the property as well.

In an email to employees late Thursday afternoon, Colonial Williamsburg President Colin Campbell said Carter’s Grove LLC, the entity Minor used to purchase the plantation for $15.3 million in 2007, failed to make the final two payments for the $10.3 million mortgage. WYDaily learned Thursday morning that Minor also owes taxes on the property to James City County for the second half of 2010 and the first half of 2011, a bill totaling $21,846.47.

The auction is set for 1 p.m. on February 15 to be held at the Williamsburg/James City County Courthouse. The historic preservation and conservation easements that prohibit residential and commercial development on the 400 acres are still valid, meaning the mansion, the view shed and the archaeological sites will be preserved.

This isn’t Minor’s first residence to be in foreclosure – last February, his 200-acre Fox Ridge Farm near Charlottesville, valued at almost $4 million, was slated to be sold at auction. The sale was cancelled at the last minute, however, according to C-ville.com (read that story here).

Minor’s entity Minor Family Hotels LLC filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last fall for his Landmark Hotel project, also in Charlottesville, which has stalled and is currently tied up in litigation (read the most recent story on C-ville.com).

Tax delinquency is not new to Minor, either. According to multiple media reports, including the Wall Street Journal, Minor and his wife owed more than $13 million in personal income tax to California last year.

Don't you think that CWF has prearranged a buyer for the auction? Perhaps even CWF. Don't you also think it strange that now we find out that CWF financed the sale? If third party financing was present, CWF would not be holding the auction.

My family have been visiting Carter's Grove since the sixties. We've seen it's developement from the Burell's to the McRays and everything in between. We've seen the developement of the museum and Wolstenholme Towne. What a waste of our History's resources all for the sake of money. I hope CW finds a buyer who will bring it again to it's former glory.

We toured the property the last year it was opened and took pictures. What a wonderful great old house! Wish it was reopened to the public.

I toured this property in 1969. Hard to imagine it isn't available to the public. If only some organization could purchase it and make it pay, like Mount Vernon does, we could all see it. Where are all the big money guys - Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Donald Trump - you know, the guys who waste their money on more frivolous things like boats and mansions?
I'd even support (shudder) the Commonwealth of VA buying it. Better to do that than run liquor stores.

Goodwin makes some good points. If Taylor spent as much time managing CW's finances as he does golfing at the Golden Horseshoe (paid for by CW) and at private clubs all over the country, then CW might have some hope.

The owner of Carter's Grove paid 16 million dollars for a horse! It's no wonder he is having financial problems. Could someone please give him my phone number? I have a couple of cats that he might be interested in. I do hope he can turns things around. Carter's Grove is a true treasure!!!

historical area.

Don't pan this great revenue generating strategy! So, this one didn't work out... They will know better when they start selling the other peripheral structure, like the Jail and Campbell's Tavern. Those buildings are so far from DOG Street, who sees them anyway? And we must make sure to have enough money to pay Colin Campbell and the other executive's salary. Otherwise, more layoffs for the frontline employees.

Again it's the botom line. Why the heck didn't CW check this guy out first? Campbell and Taylor have completely ruined CW. How long is this going to continue> Carter's Grove is an historic tresure that can never be duplicated. If I wsould ever wina mega million dollar lottery, I would buy Carter's Grove and returned it to CW on the condition they return it to it's former glory.

I am stunned that the auction is so fast. How long has CW known and how could anyone get financing on such short notice?

CW should NEVER HAVE SOLD IT THE FIRST TIME!!
