Hotel Association Has New Leader

The Williamsburg Hotel Motel Association has chosen Billy Scruggs as its new president.

Scruggs, owner of the Fife and Drum Inn and Retro’s Good Eats, replaces outgoing President Chris Canavos. Scruggs has served on the Williamsburg Planning Commission and is a former Williamsburg City Council member.

The transition was announced at the WHMA annual meeting on Wednesday. “I look forward to focusing on the primary mission of WHMA,” Scruggs said at the meeting. “We will work hard to determine our member’s concerns and needs and then, advocate accordingly. Our members have been, and will continue to be, a major component in the health and structure of the local economy.

“I am confident we can and will renew and strengthen our relationships with our many partners in the tourism industry. It is now more vital than ever for us to work together if we are to hope Williamsburg can continue to compete in the ever growing pool of tourism destinations.”

Ron Kirkland of the Patrick Henry Inn and Bluegreen Resorts will serve as Vice President. AJ Patel of the Econo Lodge Colonial continues as Secretary, and Todd Wellbrock of Courtyard by Marriott continues as Treasurer.

How refreshing to have new faces in leadership roles. Maybe now the association 's credibility can be restored as it is badly needed during these difficult times.

Congratulations and best wishes to newly-elected President Billy Scruggs, Ron Kirkland, AJ Patel, and Todd Wellbrock as you assume your respective leadership of the WHMA. Congratulations and appreciation are also in order for outgoing individuals such as Chris Canavos, Scott Hart, and other folks. I pray that everyone assume a positive and unified approach to solving problems and resolving differences among owners and operators of the overall tourism community---in the best interest of our people. As always, I welcome the opportunity to advise and assist in such efforts. Thank you.
