Senate Panel OK's Bike Safety Bill

RICHMOND – Virginia motorists would have to give bicyclists a little more room on the road under a bill approved unanimously by the Senate Transportation Committee.

Senate Bill 928 would increase from two to three feet the minimum distance for cars passing bicycles. The bill also would add bicycles and mopeds to the list of vehicles that cars cannot follow “more closely than is reasonable.”

Sen. Ryan McDougle, R-Mechanicsville, who proposed the bill, said he was against the idea in the past, but personal experience recently changed his mind.

“I’d been a little resistant to the concept until I had an experience over the summer, while I was riding my bike … and had somebody pass me at a rather close distance,” McDougle said.

Champe Burnley, president of the Virginia Bicycling Federation, said that while an extra 12 inches may not seem like a lot, it would make a big difference for cyclists in Virginia.

“We had 11 fatalities last year – 11 fatalities the year before – of bicyclists hit by vehicles,” he said. ”We feel that this will help.”

Burnley said the extra foot of passing room would bring Virginia up to the standard recommended by the League of American Bicyclists. This would entice more bicyclists to visit Virginia, he said.

“It’s a great state for tourism bicycling,” Burnley said. “People who come in from out of state to ride here know, as we have already known, what a beautiful area it is to ride in.”

Sen. John Watkins, R-Midlothian, said he’s not sure the proposed law can realistically be enforced.

“How many people have we cited in this state for passing a bike too closely?” Watkins asked. “Have we ever cited anybody?”

Even so, Watkins voted for SB 928, along with the 14 other members of the Senate Transportation Committee. The bill now is awaiting action by the full Senate.

It seems that cyclists are doomed if they do and doomed if they don't. I ride in group rides and solo on my way to work. It doesn't matter what part of the road I am on, many (not all) cars try to get as close as they can. I will admit, when we are out for an aggressive group ride, we push ourselves and do not stop at stop at all stop signs.. We try to put ourselves on a route to avoid as much traffic as possible. When we are in a group, the person in the front cannot stay there for the entire ride, so they slide off the front and work their way to the back. At that point they are two deep. If we are on a road that is less traveled, again we will ride two deep, but when we hear a car we try to move quickly to single file. We will work to improve, will you?

i sat at a light this past saturday at richmond rd and croaker rd. 7 people on bikes ran a red light. Why do they not have to obey the traffic signals. If they want respect from the motorist they need to respect the laws.

I am so over these bicyclists. They want cars to be courteous to them but do not show the same courtesy to motorists. They demand the road. Many of the side roads in Williamsburg are barely wide enough for a car and bikes should not be allowed on them.

Not to mention the fact that I have to pay a luxury tax on my car but many of the cyclists spend thousands on their bikes but don't have to pay the same tax. If they are going to demand all these tributary extra's then they need to help pay for it.

Bicyclists are their own worst enemy, not cars. Living in the city, I can't tell you how many times I have almost hit a cyclist backing out of my driveway. I am NOT EXPECTING A CYCLE ON THE SIDEWALK, DRIVING ON THE WRONG SIDE!!!

Also I don't want to drive 10 mph behine 3 cyclists who ride side by side!!

AND BTW, why don't you honor the same light signals I am required to??

And lastly, you are invisible after dark or don't you know that already!!!!

I wonder how many of the fatalities are caused by the cyclists themselves; maybe we need laws to protect us from YOU!!

It's rather moronic to ride a bike on a highway and believe you'd come out ahead when tangling with multi-ton motor vehicles.
