Foundation Laid for Busch Gardens' Tower RideBy Amber Lester Kennedy Tuesday, February 08, 2011
Busch Gardens has laid the foundation for the Mach Tower.
The concrete foundation has been laid for the 246-foot-tall Mach Tower, set to open late this spring. The tower is one of several new attractions announced by Busch Gardens in September. The tower ride, a first for the park, will rise 6 feet per second, rotating as it rises to give 30 riders a panoramic view of the Peninsula. Once at the top, riders will pause before plummeting 60 miles per hour to the bottom. Busch Gardens shared a sneak peek at the construction in an e-mail newsletter Monday. It says 760 cubic yards of concrete were used to create the Tower’s foundation, and required 85 concrete trucks for delivery. It took 10 hours of continuous pouring to create the base. When the park opens on March 26, guests will find a revamped Oktoberfest, now featuring a pretzel shop and a beer garden. The groundwork for both eateries has been laid. In September, Vice President of Entertainment Scott Gasparich said a maypole would also be added, and a blue-and-white color scheme inspired by the Bavarian flag will be introduced. Busch Gardens has also begun to the process to construct a multi-launching, electromagnetic roller coaster in the former location of the Big Bad Wolf, a suspended roller coaster that was closed in September 2009. Water Country will be getting a new 75-foot-tall slide attraction called Vanish Point, featuring four slides descending 300 feet from one tower. |
