York Motel Robbed Again at Gunpoint

YC-daysinn2-11
A surveillance camera captured images of these men as they robbed a clerk at gunpoint at the Days Inn on Lightfoot Road
An upper York County motel has been robbed at gunpoint for the second time in less than three months.

Two masked male suspects, one armed with a black handgun, entered the Days Inn located in the 700 block of Lightfoot Road just before 10 p.m. Sunday. They robbed a clerk of an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

Both suspects are described as black males between 23 and 28 years old. One was about six feet tall with a slender build; the other is described as about 5'8" with a medium build. Both wore gloves during the robbery.

No one was injured during the holdup, and the suspects fled on foot.

York County sheriff's investigators are still working on an armed robbery at the motel that happened Nov. 14 around 11:30 p.m. In that case a surveillance camera captured lone suspect wearing a mask entered the motel lobby through the front door around 11:30 p.m. He displays a black, semi-automatic firearm while leaping over the counter and instructing the clerk to open the cash drawer.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

You know sometimes I think that a lot of people want, is for our communities to go back to the "OLD WILD WEST" days. What would it be like if the clerks were armed? More people would be killed or injured. Would that be worth the robbers getting a few dollars? I am not sure of the percentage, but i do think that there are a lot more convictions of criminals than those that commit a prefect crime. Lets leave the crook catching in the hands of the law. Law enforcement officers are trained in these ares. We need to work with them as much as we can. They are the ones that put their lives in danger to protect us. Lets give them our support.

The thing to ponder is this:
These types of businesses are insured against robbery. Clerks are instructed to give up the money without resistance. If they were expected to resist, and were injured or killed, the business would surely be sued for a lot of money.
On the other hand, eliminating these two guys from the face of the earth would be a good thing.

Getting Scared, I think you understand what I was trying to point out. Most crime seems to occur at night yet we seemingly have very little coverage.

However; drive by the Capital Pancake house at lunchtime and see how many law enforcement vehicles are in the parking lot.

Cops have to eat too, I get it, but maybe we could schedule a few more of those folks at night.

And if we can't afford it we need to find a way to afford it.

Joe, we definately agree more than you may think.

I cannot verify these figures as true today but several years ago I was told that there was one state trooper to cover YC at night and 1 deputy. I would like to think that has increased with the increasing population and crime.

I would not be a hotel clerk anywhere without being armed. While I do not have a concealed carry permit yet I can see it in my near future.

Not sure arming desk clerks is a good idea. Also, why would you want to rob a hotel in the dead of winter? How much money could you possibly expect to get? I guess if they were smart, they wouldn't be robbing businesses in the firat place.

Barbara,

What is laughable is your misconception that gun control would have prevented this crime. Do you really think these two thugs purchased the guns legally? I believe in some gun control, but I don't believe in banning guns all together. Trust me, criminals will find a way to get what they want through subversive and illegal means. Do you really want them to be the only ones that are armed? The only way to combat criminals is to stand up to them.. much like some bullys need to be stood up to.

Ron,

I agree the Williamsburg area needs to bolster tourism. But saying it and having ideas to actually do it are two different things. Personally, I think Colonial Williamsburg is a bottomless pit. Localities are pouring money to these people and really are not getting anything in return. Its time to start thinking outside of the box. Adjust, adapt, and find new ways to attract travelers or get left behind.

Joe,

Then I am sure you would agree with me and many others like me in supporting efforts to improve our tourism base and at the same time increase our tax revenues to better support law enforcement.

When tourism is strong it helps everyone. When tourism is weak it hurts everyone. Fix tourism and we can fix a lot of problems in the area.

Another reason for tighter gun control. When is Virginia going to stop being a "good ole boy" state? And to suggest that hotel desk clerks should be armed with weapons is laughable.

Ron,

Law Enforcement cannot be everywhere all the time. This is a York County robbery and they are hugely under-staffed.

Many of your questions scream idiocy. Due to the lackluster tourism around here, every local law enforcment agency and really.. every type of government agency has been cut or reduced.

I can also assure you, the York deputies are not writing many traffic tickets. It is not the philosophy of their sheriff. The same goes for James City County and Williamsburg. If you knew the actual number of law enforcement on patrol, you would be astonished at how limited the resources really are.

To think law enforcement can prevent every crime is crazy. Never has happened and never will happened. Give it time and I would bet they make an arrest on these robberies soon enough. Does not prevent what happeend, but an arrest will prevent future crimes by these two crackheads.

Finally, the single intelligent question you asked is the level of administrators compared with the level of folks actually doing patrols. All of our local agencies are top heavy.. Big Time! Combine that with administrators hamstringing their officers by spending their budget on unuseful tools that do nothing to prevent and solve crime and well... there is your story.

Thank God no one was hurt!!!

Where is law enforcement? How many hotels have to get robbed before law enforcement in the triangle starts patrolling more often?

How many officers in the city and counties are there? How many shifts are worked during the evening and overnight hours. How many more tax dollars do hotels have to pay to get some level of protection?

Does someone have to get hurt before something is done? Is there a task force on crime? How many crimes are we solving vs. how many traffic tickets do we write? How many officers actually patrol and how many admin positions are there? How many resources are diverted away from law enforcement to other programs?

WY DAILY please ask our local law enforcement leaders to tell us what they are going to do to protect our tourist related business's and all of our citizens and what resources do they need to improve public safety.
