Woman Dies in Fall from Parkway Bridge

Williamsburg police report a city woman apparently fell to her death Tuesday morning from a bridge over the National Colonial Parkway.

Police received two 911 calls two minutes apart around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. City police spokesman Major Greg Riley said the first caller reported a woman was "straddling the bridge" where Merrimac Trail passes over the Colonial Parkway. The second caller reported the woman was lying on the parkway below.

National Park Service officers were the first to arrive and began CPR, Riley said. City of Williamsburg medics arrived shortly after. They pronounced the woman, later identified as 67-year-old Diana Legg, dead.

Mrs. Legg lived nearby on Merrimac Trail, Riley said.

An investigation into the circumstances have led police to conclude the fall was a suicide, Riley said. A family member told police Mrs. Legg suffered from depression, and there was "no evidence to indicate any other finding at this time," Riley said.

A final disposition on the cause of death is pending the results of the medical examiner's report.

Man I just drove thru there at about 10 till 10 that day. On my way back home around 1115 I was diverted by authorities to detour around the area. Experience told me that the seen I saw was for a fatality. It is sad. I wonder why passer bus didn't stop to try and talk her off the bridge? It's unfortunate that "most" people just drive by and don't think anything of it. I can't believe there were such few calls. It's disturbing I only wish I could have been there at the right time to act. Not that I know I could have saved her, but I could have tried.

Quoting Common Sense:
That's not a very high bridge. Did a vehicle hit her?

you can fall off of a step stool and die, is just matters how you land and what you land on. If your mind is to commit suicide, I would think one would purposfully land in a pretty vulnerable position.

With that said, its a sad day for her family and my heart is with them. Depression is a silent killer and the signs usually only show after it is too late.... tell those you know, you love them; show those you dont know, how to love.

I am sad that this poor woman felt that suicide was her only option. I live next door to this overpass bridge and only wish I could have seen her and talked to her and tried to help her. My prayers for her and her family. People, please try and help those that are depressed by listening to them.

Good gracious. Poor dear woman, that is so sad. Wish that she could have found some help. Prayers for Mrs. Legg and her survivors, and anyone else suffering in that way.
