Another Business in New Town Closes

California Tortilla, located near the movie theater on Main Street in New Town, has closed its doors.

Over the weekend, a sign reading “owner has taken possession of this premises, contact landlord for rentry [sic]” appeared on the door of the restaurant, which has been open for four years.

The owner didn’t have a comment on the matter on Monday.

California Tortilla’s closing follows on the heels of the bike shop at the end of the street, Spoke ‘N True Bicycle and Fitness, which closed last month. That leaves only two businesses remaining open in the shops fronting Village Square on the same block as the movie theater, following the previous closure of Cheeburger Cheeburger and Maggie Moos.

The Shops on Main Street will see two new businesses soon, American Family Fitness and Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts.

Very sorry to hear this. We really enjoyed Cal Tortilla, the food and the workers. They were the only place around with fish tacos! Thanks for the good effort folks, I'm very sorry this place didn't work out for you and wish you every luck in future business!

So sad to see CalTort go--we were there at least once a week. Agreed Pat was such a nice person, the kind of business owner that you don't run into much anymore. I wish him the best! New Town's got a real problem--they don't seem to care that there are more shuttered windows than working businesses.

This is another sad development for New Town. It is clearly dying!

Would like to echo the comments about the owner. Seemed to always be there and wanted to make this work, was present in the Williamsburg community.

If the developers are not more flexible with their rents, these events will continue to play out as tenants more to other locations that are more reasonable.

Some rent is better than no rent....

All the shops not on main street and east of courthouse.

The overall upkeep of Main Street is lacking. At first the street may appear clean, but what about the glass shards from busted windows on both sides of the street endangering our community's youth and elderly. Did anyone notice the turned over poopshed in the eyesore that is Opus 9's "old parking lot" this weekend. I've noticed people along both ends of main taking garbage openly across the sidewalk. It's disheartening to think of a store going out of business on this street with such a lack of care not only from the landlord, but also the Newtown Management. Shame on both.

So who's next on Main Stink? The bead store? Z Pizza again? The Mole Hole?

I only hope the community supports these places trying to keep the dream alive. It's clear money is the centered focus of Newtown Management and Developers Steality.

If we supported tourism properly around here. Places like this would have a better shot at making it. People on vacation will go to the movies and if you have a place to eat close to the theater you might pick up a little business. But alas, I think that most people around here would like to see tourism disappear, so they could go back to their sleepy little town. But if you want places like Cal tortilla to stick around, you better get on the tourism bandwagon. We don't have the population density around here to support all of these restaurants, sho ps,etc.

Quoting Nice Guy:
He was one of the nicest owners, and he seemed to always be there on the front line, at least in the beginning. I'm sorry to see it go, but hate to say, saw it coming.

True, Pat is a great guy and a great friend. I can say this to the owners and managers of NewTown....ie the folks in CT, Shore, and NewTown Associates.

Your antics and greed have lost a fine man. Pat, through it all, was always positive and shared stories of hope with me about his business and New Town.

You chose to not work with a good man, a good family and you will replace the business of course,,,,but you can never replace the spirit lost.

Good luck to you Pat.
