2011 Occasion for the Arts to Fill a WeekendBy Amber Lester Kennedy Thursday, March 03, 2011 An Occasion for the Arts is extending the celebration to a full weekend after 42 years as a one-day show. On Oct. 1 and 2, Williamsburg will celebrate the visual and performing arts with art shows, live entertainment, wine tasting and more. The event will encompass all of Merchant’s Square and extend down Boundary Street to the Williamsburg Community Building. “For 42 years, An Occasion for the Arts has managed to craft an amazing artistic and musical experience in just one day,” says Jane Medlin Burton, president of the event’s board of directors. “All long-standing traditions such as An Occasion must embrace change in order to attract new artists and new audiences.” The new two-day format will open the festival up to more artists who typically participate in multi-day art shows, and will bring art of higher quality and variety, according to a press release. It will also require more volunteers; those interested can contact the organizers here. The deadline for artists to apply for the show is May 15.
