City Challenges Residents to Live Green

WGCOL_greenresidenceWilliamsburg is challenging city residents to show how environmentally conscious they are at home.

The city’s Green Team, made up of employees from all departments, launched a Green Business Challenge last fall, and they’re now launching a Williamsburg Green Resident challenge to recognize various ways residents live “green.”

“We’re proud of our work as a Green Government, but we’re also very aware that our residents are just as committed to environmental sustainability and are a driving force in improving the City’s ‘green’ quality of life,” said Jodi Miller, Assistant City Manager and Chair of the City’s Green Team.

“We want to acknowledge the ways they’re reducing their carbon footprints and hope to inspire other residents to take up the challenge as well.”

To be considered a “Green Resident,” applicants living in the city must fill out a simple form to list how they reduce waste, conserve water, conserve energy and use transportation with carbon reduction in mind.

Completed applications with 12 or more checked items will be included in a random drawing for one of five “green” gift baskets. The Green Team also invites applicants to submit photos or short videos of their green activities.

Submissions are due by 4:30 pm on Earth Day, April 22. Apply online through the city’s website. Read more about last year’s Green Business Challenge on the city’s website here.

How green is our city govt? They have added to light pollution and to city costs by placing lights to illuminate the side of the new addition to the govt building and parking lot lights which never turn off. This also disrupts the sleep of the residents who live across the street. I would suggest timers on the pkg lot lights with a switch to provide a brief period of illumination when anyone working late could get to their car safely. Although, there is already plenty of light with all the street lamps along that section of Lafayette. Again I ask, how green is our city government?

The City Council turn "green" and reduce their salaries. And maybe get cheaper furniture for their new building additions. Take the burden off the taxpayers. Thank you very much sirs.
