Change Fire Alarm Batteries Along With Clocks

As you go to move clocks forward one hour on Sunday, take a minute to change your fire alarm battery.

The York County Department of Fire and Life Safety is recommending people take the twice-a-year opportunity to change fire alarm batteries as they go to change the clocks in their homes. Clocks should be moved forward one hour on Sunday, with Daylight SavingsTime kicking in at 2 a.m.

Fire Chief Stephen Kopczynski says changing fire alarm batteries can make the difference in surviving a fire. The National Fire Protection Association reports that home fire deaths occur every three hours in the United States. A working smoke alarm doubles a family’s chances of escaping.

In addition to changing the fire alarm batteries, the Department of Fire and Life Safety recommends that residents take time to test their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms by pushing the test button, planning exit options and discussing escape routes with all the family members. Lithium batteries that are good for 10 years might not need to be replaced on an annual basis, but should still be checked.

York County residents who are unable to change their own smoke alarm battery or do not have a working smoke alarm are encouraged to contact a family member, neighbor or friend to assist them. Anyone unable to afford a smoke alarm should contact the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety at (757) 890-3600.
