Search is On for Next Richard Bland College President

A search committee has been formed to find the next president of the Richard Bland College, a Petersburg branch of the College of William and Mary.

Dennis Liberson, chair of the administration committee of the Board of Visitors, will lead the search committee to find a successor to James B. McNeer. McNeer worked at the junior college for more than four decades and served as president for 15 years. He plans to retire June 30, 2012.

The committee also includes two more Board of Visitors members, along with Richard Bland alumni, student and faculty representatives. The committee plans to host two forums to gather input from the campus community. A forum for students will be from 1-2 p.m. April 13; a forum for faculty and staff will be from 2:30-3:30 p.m. later that same day. An additional forum will later be held for alumni.

McNeer joined the Richard Bland faculty in 1968 as a government professor. Since then, the 50-year-old college has grown from about 400 students to about 1,600 students. In 2008, it became the only two-year college in Virginia to offer on-campus housing.

The search committee has been asked to bring two to three finalists to the Board of Visitors by March 15, 2012. Members of the public can also send comments on the search by e-mail to Ed Betts, secretary of the committee.

Quoting Greg:
Isn't it time to move Richard Bland to the Virginia Community College System?
 Richard Bland should keep its ties with William and Mary and become a four year college and never a community college.
