Rabid Raccoon Found on Country Club DriveBy Amber Lester Kennedy Monday, March 14, 2011 A rabid raccoon was found on Country Club Drive in James City County, according to the Peninsula Health District. The raccoon was spotted in the 100 block of Country Club Drive. Anyone with information about exposure to the animal – a bite, scratch or contact with saliva by open wound or eyes, nose or mouth – should contact the Health Department at 757-253-4813. If a pet came into contact with the raccoon, contact Animal Control after-hours at 757-253-1800. Rabies is a fatal, but preventable, disease that is carried by mammals and has been present on the Peninsula since the mid-80s. The Environmental Health Services office will be contacting the immediate neighbors in the area, along with homeowners’ associations in the community. To prevent rabies exposure, the District recommends vaccinating pets, reporting all exposures to animals to your doctor and the health department and enjoying wildlife from a distance. For more information, contact the Health District at 757-594-7305. |
