Statewide Tornado Drill Set for This Morning

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management and the National Weather Service are sponsoring a statewide tornado drill, set to take place at 9:45 a.m.

At that time, the National Weather Service will send a “test” tornado warning on NOAA Weather Radio, prompting radio and television stations to broadcast a test message. Some NOAA Weather Radios will not automatically turn on when receiving a “test” signal, so participants should turn on their radios approximately five minutes before the beginning of the drill.

When a test tornado warning is sounded, participants should quickly move to a previously designated tornado safe area. Safe areas include basements, interior rooms, bathrooms, closets or hallways on the lowest level of a building. Safe areas should not be near windows. Once participants find a safe area, they should crouch and cover their heads with their hands.

Local fire department personnel will assist schools with their tornado drills. To learn more about the drill, click here.

1) SO NEEDED...thanks , VDEM and NWS!!
This local remembers, a couple of years ago, researching in our Scotland St. Library when a staffer came by, quietly, and asked all of us to move quickly to the BASEMENT, that there was a real Tornado WARNING. And we all did.
2) For the first time, reality of a tornado sunk in for me, us. The Library staff was so professional in working with us, informing us for that stay in the basement.
3) When we were given the OK to leave, eventually, I immediately noticed outside that the rest of our town, around me, were going about their business, normally. NO ONE had taken the initiative or even bothered to take the WARNING (not drill) seriously...no one. Not even our schools.
4) Today, the JCC Fire Chief instructs all in the firehouses and shares with residents. Our Rec Centers have signs up designating a spot to go to in case and have trained them there to act and react.
5) Back during that early TORNADO WARNING, a couple of years ago, (by the way, a tornado DID strike across the river from us that day), I was astounded at the unpreparedness for ALL unspecting residents and business...BUT NO LONGER!!!!
6) Oh, on a personal note, this person was actually 'cited to see and experience, for the first ever, that we did indeed have a BASEMENT in our Library...givin g me a creative idea for another...writi ng!
