VDOT Lane Closure Forecast: March 20-26

vdotlogoIn an effort to keep you informed, VDOT publishes the following scheduled highway lane closures that may affect traffic in Hampton Roads. These closures are subject to change due to weather conditions and other unforeseen events. Other closures may occur that do not appear on this report, including Governor Bob McDonnell's "pothole blitz," which has VDOT crews out and about across the Commonwealth.

Note: VDOT closed the I-264 Downtown Tunnel westbound at 7 p.m. Friday, March 18, and will reopen the road at 5 a.m. on Monday, March 21. The City Hall entrance ramp to I-264 will be closed during the tunnel closure. Motorists can access I-464 from the Tidewater Drive on-ramp, or the Market Street on-ramp. HENRICO/NEW KENT/JAMES CITY COUNTY/YORK/NEWPORT NEWS, HAMPTON
I-64 East/West – Motorists should expect mobile, alternating lane closures from the I-295 Interchange to Mallory Street (Exit 268) in Hampton for pothole patching, Monday, March 21, through Friday, March 25, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Motorists should be alert to ramp closures.

I-64 East/West – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures at the Queens Creek Bridge for interstate evaluation inspections, Sunday, March 13, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

COLEMAN BRIDGE
Route 17 South – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures on the Coleman Bridge for maintenance crews to apply pavement markings on the bridge structure roadway at the bridge traffic signals, Tuesday, March 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, maintenance operations will occur Wednesday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

JAMES RIVER BRIDGE
Route 17 South – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures on the James River Bridge for beam end repair, Monday, March 21, through Friday, March 25, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, March 20, through Thursday, March 24, from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.

HAMPTON/NEWPORT NEWS

I-664 North – Motorists should expect multiple lane closures Powhatan Parkway for overhead sign repairs, Wednesday, March 23, through Friday, March 25, from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.

HAMPTON /NORFOLK
I-64 East – Motorists should expect single mobile lane closures from Mallory Street (Exit 268) to the I-264 Interchange (Exit 284) for pothole repairs, Monday, March 21, through Friday, March 25, 9 a.m. 3 p.m.

MONITOR-MERRIMAC MEMORIAL BRIDGE-TUNNEL
I-664 North/South – Motorists should expect single alternating lane closures for tunnel maintenance operations, Sunday, March 20, through Wednesday, March 23, from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.

HAMPTON ROADS BRIDGE-TUNNEL

I-64 East – Motorist should expect overnight single lane closures Sunday through Thursday, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for the roadway lighting upgrade to the I-64 East Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Westbound traffic will not be affected and no weekend closures are planned. The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2011.

Motorists are encouraged to use I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel to avoid delays. Take Exit 264 to access I-664.  Use exit 15A for Norfolk and Virginia Beach destinations. Use exit 15B for Chesapeake and Outer Banks destinations.

I-64 East – Motorists should expect a single lane closure for tunnel lighting replacement, Sunday, March 20, through Thursday, March 24, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

DOWNTOWN TUNNEL
I-264 West – The Downtown Tunnel will be closed Westbound for ceiling panel removal beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 18, through Monday, March 21, at 5 a.m. The City Hall on-ramp to I-264 will be closed during the tunnel closure. Motorists can access I-464 from the Tidewater Drive on-ramp or from the Market Street on-ramp.

1-264 East/West – Motorists should expect multiple lane closures in the Downtown Tunnel for tunnel sweeping, Monday, March 21, through Thursday, March 24, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

BERKLEY BRIDGE
I-264 West – Motorists should expect a single right lane closure on the Berkley Bridge for bridge joint repair, Tuesday, March 22, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. In the event of inclement weather, the closure will move to Wednesday, March 23, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

MIDTOWN TUNNEL
Route 58 East/West – Motorists should expect mobile lane closures for lighting repairs, Monday, March 21, through Thursday, March 24, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

NORFOLK
Hampton Boulevard Grading Project

Hampton Boulevard traffic continues to be temporarily detoured between Mapleshade Avenue and B Avenue. The six-lane detour will remain in place until the underpass is constructed. Project completion is scheduled for winter 2013.

I-64 West – Motorists should expect a single lane closure at the I-264/I-64 Interchange, including on and off ramps for bridge safety inspection, Monday, March 21, through Friday, March 25, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-564 East – Motorists should expect single lane closures on I-564 between I-64 and Hampton Boulevard, Monday, March 21, through Wednesday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

I-564 East/West – Motorists should expect single mobile lane closures on I-564 for pothole repair, Monday, March 21, through Friday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

NORFOLK/PORTSMOUTH

I-264 East – Motorists should expect multiple alternating lane closures from DesMoines Avenue (Exit 6) to I-464 West (Exit 8) for overhead sign panel removal and replacement Monday, March 21, through Friday, March 25, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-264 East – Motorists should expect multiple alternating lane closures from Frederick Boulevard (Exit 5) to I-464 West (Exit 8) for overhead sign panel removal and replacement Tuesday, March 22, and Wednesday, March 23, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

PORTSMOUTH
I-264 East – Motorists should expect multiple lane closures from Frederick Boulevard (Exit 5) to Effingham Street (Exit 7) for overhead sign maintenance, Sunday, March 20, through Monday, March 21, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-264 West – Motorists should expect multiple lane closures from Effingham Street (Exit 7) to Des Moines Avenue (Exit 8) for overhead sign maintenance, Sunday, March 20, through Monday, March 21, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-264 West – Motorists should expect singe lane closures from Des Moines Avenue (Exit 8) to Portsmouth Boulevard (Exit 4) for overhead sign repairs, Monday, March 21, through Wednesday, March 22, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.

I-264 West – Motorists should expect singe lane closures from Frederick Boulevard (Exit 5) to Victory Boulevard (Exit 3) for overhead sign repairs, Wednesday, March 23, through Thursday, March 24, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.

I-264 West – Motorists should expect singe lane closures from Portsmouth Boulevard (Exit 4) to Greenwood Drive for overhead sign repairs, Thursday, March 24, and Friday, March 25, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.

NORFOLK/VIRGINIA BEACH

I-264 East – Motorists should expect lane closures from the I-64 Interchange to the Oceanfront for pothole repairs, from Monday, March 21, through Friday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

PORTSMOUTH/NORFOLK/VIRGINIA BEACH
I-264 East/West – Motorists should expect mobile lane closures from Effingham Street (Exit 7) in Portsmouth to Birdneck Road (Exit 25) for storm drain cleaning, from Monday, March 21, through Friday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

CHESAPEAKE
I-64 East/West Restorative Pavement Project – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures from the Bowers Hill Interchange to the I-464 Interchange, Monday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for restorative pavement maintenance work.  Work will include patching isolated concrete pavement, increasing the width of the inside shoulder and replacing two lifts of asphalt. These paving operations will continue Sunday through Thursday until the end of August 2011.

Galberry Road Intersection Improvement - Route 13 South Military Highway – Motorists should expect lane closures at Cavalier Boulevard and Executive Drive on South Military Highway for intersection improvements to Galberry Road. The improvement project includes drainage system upgrades and the installation of left turn lane. Crews will close the center lanes on South Military Highway at the Galberry Road intersection through the completion of the project in May, 2011.

Motorists are advised to drive cautiously in the work zone. Crews will be on the roadway Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Fentress Airfield Road - Fentress Airfield Road will remain closed between Mount Pleasant Road and Blackwater Road for intersection improvements until the end of April.

During the road closure motorists will use the following detour, which is approximately 15 miles:

From North Landing Road motorists will turn right on Mount Pleasant Road, left on Centerville Turnpike and left on Land of Promise Road.

From Blackwater Road, motorists will turn left on Fentress Airfield Road, right on Land of Promise Road, right on Centerville Turnpike, right on Mount Pleasant Road and right on North Landing Road.

I-464 South – Motorists should expect single lane closures at South Main Street for overhead sign repair, Tuesday, March 22, through Wednesday, March 23, from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.

I-64 East/West – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures from the Rotunda Bridge to the Battlefield Interchange for shoulder restoration and guardrail repair, Sunday, March 20, through Friday, March 25, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

I-64 West – Motorists should expect a single lane closures from the I-264 Interchange (Exit 299) to Route 17/George Washington Highway (Exit 296) for guardrail repairs, Monday, March 21, through Friday, March 25, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-664 South – Motorists should expect a lane closure at the Bowers Hill Interchange for shoulder repairs, Wednesday, March 23, through Friday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 58 East – Motorists should expect single lane closures at the I-664 Interchange for overhead sign inspection, Monday, March 21, through Wednesday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 58 East – Motorists should expect single lane closures at the I-664 Interchange for shoulder repairs, Monday, March 21, through Wednesday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Portsmouth Boulevard (Route 337) East – Motorists should expect single mobile lane Monday, March 21, through Wednesday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

South Military Highway (Route 13) North/South – Motorists should expect single mobile lane closures for bridge inspection, Wednesday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to noon.

College Drive (Route 135) North/South – Motorists should expect single mobile lane closures at the I-664 Interchange for overhead sign inspections, Monday, March 21, through Wednesday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Pughsville Road (Route 659) North/South – Motorists should expect single mobile lane closures at the I-664 Interchange for overhead sign inspections, Monday, March 21, through Wednesday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 168 North – Motorists should expect single alternating lane closures at the I-64 Interchange between Battlefield Boulevard and the Oak Grove Connector, Monday, March 21, through Wednesday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

HIGH RISE BRIDGE

I-64 East/West – Motorists should expect single alternating lane closures at the High Rise Bridge for drain cleaning, Monday, March 21, through Friday, March 25, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

GILMERTON BRIDGE

Route 13 East/West – Motorists should expect daytime closures including flagging operations in the project work zone, stopping traffic in both directions for up to 10 minutes. Crews will be restriping roadway during daytime closures.

Crews will replace delineators, located on the roadway, during draw bridge openings. Motorists are asked to use extreme caution in the work zone.

CHESAPEAKE/SUFFOLK
I-664 North/South – Motorists should expect single alternating lane closure from the Bowers Hill Interchange to the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel for guardrail repair, Sunday, March 20, through Thursday, March 24, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

VIRGINIA BEACH
Witchduck Road North/South –Motorists should expect single median lane closures from Bonney Road to the I-264 Interchange on Witchduck Road and on Bonney Road for asphalt placement and manhole reconstruction, Monday, March 21, through Friday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

London Bridge Road – Motorists should be alert to traffic shifts as the London Bridge Road project progresses to the next phase. Construction crews will close the two inside lanes for median construction, shifting traffic to the two outside lanes for the duration of this phase of the project. Motorists should use caution in the work zone and be alert to the traffic shift.

COURTLAND

Southampton Parkway West – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures in Courtland on Southampton Parkway for right turn lane installation, Monday, March 21, through Friday, March 25, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

GREENSVILLE COUNTY/SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY

Route 58 West – Motorists should expect alternating mobile lane closures from Emporia to Courtland for pavement resurfacing operations, Monday, March 21, through Friday, March 25, from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

GREENSVILLE COUNTY

Route 301 North/South – Motorists should expect alternating lane closures from the I-95 Interchange to the Sussex County line for  paving operations, Monday, March 21, through Friday, March 25, from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

SURRY

Route 10 East/West - Colonial Trail East, Route 10, at College Run Drive (Route 635) will close for cross-drain replacement at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, and reopen Friday, March 25, prior to the morning rush hour. In the event of inclement weather, the overnight closure may be cancelled.

Motorists will be detoured during the overnight lane closure:

From Colonial Trail East (Route 10 west), motorists turn right on Route 632, left on Golden Hill Road (Route 616) and right on Colonial Trail East (Route 10 west).

From Colonial Trail East (Route 10 east), motorists turn left on Route 632, right on Golden Hill Road (Route 616) and left on Colonial Trail East (Route 10 west).

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY
Route 58 East/West – Motorists should expect lane closures at the intersection of Route 611, Story Station Road and Route 58 Southampton Parkway for waterline installation, Monday, March 21, through Friday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
